(Orthography of origin)Bort close Ravel, on March 4th, 1740.
Dear Sir,
I ay received the 21è feuvrier the letter that Mister the Intendant my fact honor of writing to me, of the 31è last January. Being very subjected to the orders of his majesty, I in ay make all the use that I ay.
Since I am cleaned, I ay seu, thanks to god, that there was no illegitimate Enfens in my parroisse; I do not know either only any facing nor merre ayt exposed of Enfens legitimate (1). What me surprenoit extremely longt time before even as I have reçeu the honor of that of Mr the intendant, because I voyois and see a so dreadful misery in my parish, than you will have paine has to believe what one came to me to tell, and do not believe only these suspect people soint.
They are the husbands who come me to show their wives to want to make perish, not being able to nourish them, not being nouries they-even and intending to shout and to finish crumb of April has their Enfens poor. They are women who show their husbands who by giving up their wives charged with 7 has 8 small enfens advised to them to save most extremely and to let perish the others. Indeed if you knew quality and little of foods which they you take would be surprised to see them vivres. Also they have only the skin sticks on the bones. They do not go almost any more, they are trailed.
Here a Sample in the way in which they nourish the majority. There be a poor woman veufve charged with 7 enfens which found the means of buying a cut of faine (2). These poor little rascal the indicator did not want to let them cook; they said for reason that without cooking they them amuseroint more longt time. Dautres with black village or sarazain without passing in makes boulie with pure water without salt, and still supports their poor enfens which fall from langor. Others esté to seek roots of fougerre and mengent them like pourceaux the, happy ones if the frost them in avoit privéz.
This dreadful misery causes well still larger Meaux. It was women who came to me to say which avoint surprised marys to appease their passion brutalle avs to them white beets; and them by fesant douycement reproaches, they answered as brutally quils comportoint, as they avoint only too much Enffents, as they travailloint day and night; and that they pouvoint not to nourish them ny to even nourish itself them. It was husbands who came to me to say that their wives étoint offered to have something to nourish and nourish their Enfens.
Here is, Sir, of quoy I ay ears and eyes repus the every day. And rained has god that I have quoy to cure it, but the poor parroissiens, Pasteur feels some (3). I still add quils could not anything sow accause pluyes of the autumn. They can nothing prepare to sow the village of accause March excessive frost. And even when they prepareroint, there are not six in my parr of them. who soint in a position to get quoy.
I thus write cecy to thank Mr the intendant for the honor quil my fact and with us so that by your wisdom and your charity you as a fascier the use that it you plairat. If I worts been able to speak moy to you even I in aurois say more you, but I finish fear of annoying you by sad récis and am with respect

Notes
(1) It was the essential object of this investigation organized by the Intendant Nightingale.
(2) Faîne: fruit of the beech
(3) the situation of the priest feels poverty of its parishioners
It is probably starting from such letters that (under the pseudonym of Moheau), MONTYON, intendant of Auvergne of 1768 to 1770, regrets: ““ Already these disastrous secrecies, unknown with any animal other than the man, these secrecies penetrated in the campaigns: one misleads nature into the villages. ”” (MOHEAU H.: Research and considerations on the population of France. Paris, 1778)
But the priest of Bort (if not his flocks) is unaware of a practice attested as of this time, in the easy mediums it is true: the coitus interruptus…
