History
The borough owes its destiny and its name with the presence of the bridge on the Isere, established with the Moyen-âge by the Abbaye Saint-Barnard of Romans, and of which the oldest mention goes up with 1033. The Chanoine S then perceived a feudal Droit, under the name of Péage, Pontonnage or Leyde on all the people, goods and cattle which borrowed it, against the guarantee of its maintenance. Several documents give an account of the tariffs and the methods of imposition. If the inhabitants within the competence of the current canton were exempted by it, except for the days of large fairs, the foreigners saw themselves on the other hand surtaxed. In the same way, the Batelier S of Isere were to discharge tribute of their oars. This activity was not long in fixing the habitat, and the hamlet of Pizançon, which in the beginning was with the outlet of the bridge, saw its population increasing quickly.
As of the Middle Ages, the stone bridge was marked out of three constructions: in the south a tower bored at its base of a door rose, close which the house was held of the pontonnier; in north a vault, known under the term of Our-Lady-of-Bridge, as well as a small hospital faced on each side of the apron. The bridge was damaged many times by the violent risings of Isere. The tower, which proudly raised the weapons of the town of Romans then Dauphiné, disappeared at the 17th century. On several occasions, of the collapsed arches were replaced by a wood apron. At the 18th century the rebuilding of the work, supplemented at the next century by its widening was undertaken. But the bridge was to still endure new wounds because with three recoveries (in 1814, 1940 and 1944) its second arch was destroyed. Returned peace, it always preserves the scar of it.
So Romance a beautiful fame with the shoe of luxury acquired, Borough-of-Toll owes his with the Chapellerie of felt. Succeeding a solid tradition of Hosiery under the Old Mode, the felt hat industry is introduced towards 1810 by workmen come from Cognin into Isere. In 1811, three workshops are announced, and a half century later, this activity occupies more than 400 workmen divided into 16 workshops.
The Feutre is obtained starting from hairs of Lapin domesticates, which are the subject of many operations, realized by the workmen under painful conditions of Humidité, like the Soufflage or the Foulage. In the campaigns around, the “rabbit bores” were numerous, and their activity sometimes remained in the name of localities. But the installation of the line of Railroad with Romans in 1864 put a term at the local origin of the raw material, since one preferred the Australian rabbit hair then.
In 1883 occurred a crisis hatter without precedent, because of protectionist attitude of certain countries where the production ran out. The overcome difficulties, the activity still developed until in 1929 where she knew her Apogée. At that time, the Mossant company, which had been the pionnière of the hat industry péageoise, employed more than 1.200 workmen, and many other workshops produced at its sides of the Cover-chief S that quality. But starting from this date, the fashion of the “naked heads” caused a rapid decline of the hat industry, whose certain workshops however continued to function until in 1985.
