Demography
Economy
Borough-in-Bresse profits from a situation privileged like at the same time regional and European crossroads, which supports its expansion as a center of exchanges. The city knew to adapt to the changes and the needs of the local economic actors, in particular agricultural, with the wire of the centuries. The most obvious trace of this situation is the road star grid whose agglomeration is the center, which allows an easy access in the middle of the city (fairground), traditional meeting place between an offer rich in famous agricultural produce (poultries) and a final or intermediate request important (provisioning of the region of Lion).
The situation on the European lanes is also very old, as the presence testifies it to the monastery of Husks, completed by Marguerite of Austria as much to honor her husband, that to offer to the traveller connecting the valley of the the Saone to the Lombardy, a spectacle pointing out the bonds with the Burgundy and highlighting the richness of the area.
The position of crossroads and center of an agricultural rich person area made it possible to develop processing and manufacture of agricultural produce and services associated. The manufacture of trailers and the slaughter-houses thrived until our days, while the valorization of the agricultural produce adapted the needs of the consumers (flat cooked). A pole of research and development (Alimentec) supplements the agroalimentary vocation of the city.
The second part of the 20th century however was one period of deep change for the city. She saw her industrial activity developing with the favor of the establishment of the factory Berliet (today Renault Trucks) dedicated to the manufacture of heavy trucks. The die heavy trucks became the major activity with several thousands of employment working in companies sometimes leaders in their field (refrigerating Tractors, carriers, cells, trailers for various applications, commercial vehicles special, distribution…). This specialization is not without danger, but the opening of the PECO and the strong demand in transport which results from it, is for the time being, overall, plus a chance that a handicap for this activity. It also profits from a strong demand as regards technological change in order to “stick” to a context in full evolution (safety, environment, Piggyback traffic, means of communication…). The creation of highway connections accentuated its role of logistician city.
Behind this headlight activity, Borough-in-Bresse east, in addition, a metallurgical center specialized in the metal wire transformation (wire-drawing mill, heat treatments, assembly or sleeving) for mechanical and electric applications (, transport tension cables of energy). This activity represents approximately a thousand of direct uses on sites belonging to international groups (Mittal Steel, Nexans).
This dynamism results in a relatively low unemployment rate (6%). The size of the city, modest compared to the population of the department (50 000 inhabitants for more than 500.000 in Ain), has a margin of considerable growth.
