History

The town of Borough-Saint-Maurice is held on the site of the antique Bergintrum (or Bergentrum), the Gallo-Roman time. The city was located on the Roman way carrying out of Turin to Lyon, passing by the Col of the Small Saint-Bernard, at the edge of a small brook, Bergintra (today: the Charbonnet).

At the end of the Roman epoch, the city takes the name of Saint Maurice, whose worship was massively spread in the Alps following its martyrdom, to become Ecclesia Sancti Mauricii; the " term; Bourg" appearing only at the 15th century. After one revolutionary short period, the city takes its final name at the 19th century.

During the French revolution, the French revolutionists passed the border between the Savoy and France. They re-elected the city Nargue-Sardinian in 1794, which kept this name until the end of the first annexation in 1815 (see Histoire of Savoy).
