Boris Spassky
Boris Vasilievitch Spassky (January 30th 1937, with Leningrad, the USSR -) is a player of failures. He becomes world champion in 1969 by beating Tigran Petrossian and loses the title into 1972 vis-a-vis Bobby Fischer.
Youth
Spassky very early learned how to play failures: to the 9 years age, it adhered to the section failures with the palate of the pioneers in Leningrad. Its immense talent immediately was recognized and encouraged by the State. In addition to the setting at its disposal of a trainer in sight (Vladimir Zak), Spassky accepted a monthly purse. As of 10 years, it obtained the degree of play of 1st category in the USSR; at 11 years, it gained the championship of its category. In 1952 it took part in the semi-final of the championship of the USSR with Riga and obtained 50 percent of the possible points. The same year, it was second with the championship of Leningrad.Its successes push the Soviet association of failures to send it in 1953 in Bucharest for its first international tournament. Spassky obtains the 4th-6th place and, at 16 years, receives consequently the title of international Maître.
World champion
In 1955, Spassky becomes world champion of the young people with Antwerp. It is qualified in 1956 for the Tournoi of the candidates, but does not manage to obtain the right to face Mikhaïl Botvinnik. Then, abruptly, whereas everyone predicts a bright future to him, Spassky is forgotten, eclipsed by the rise to power of Mikhaïl Tal.
After a small bad patch, Spassky gains the championship of the USSR in 1961. It is qualified two years afterwards for the tournament of the candidates. It demolishes Paul Kérès, Efim Geller and Tal thus gaining the right to defy Tigran Petrossian for the world title. In 1966, it loses the match against Petrossian (12,5 to 11,5).
In 1967, in the tournaments of the candidates, Spassky faces and beats, successively, Geller, Bent Larsen and Viktor Kortchnoï to face Petrossian in 1969 again. With two points in advance, Boris Spassky is crowned world champion on June 17th, 1969.
He gives his title concerned in 1972 to Reykjavik against Bobby Fischer which beats it with four points in advance, putting fine at 24 years Soviet domination. After this defeat, Spassky falls in disgrace near the Soviet federation: it will not be able to take part any more in the tournaments abroad.
Its end of a career
In 1974, it fails the reconquest of its title vis-a-vis Anatoly Karpov, in semi-final of the Tournoi of the candidates, which beats it severely 7-4.
In 1978, Spassky is beaten by Viktor Kortchnoï finally candidates.
It then ignores gradually failures.
Spassky, which married in 1975 a Russian Frenchwoman of origin, Marina Stcherbatcheff, settles in France, and obtains French nationality. It in particular belonged to the club of failures of Auxerre (the White Lady) with Garry Kasparov, Anatoly Karpov
In 1992, it disputes a match revenge in Yugoslavia against Bobby Fischer which it loses (+5 -10 =15).
Today, it continues to practice the competition (in particular in the competitions by teams). He plays at least once per annum Jardin of Luxembourg.
