Boris Gelfand
Boris Abramovitch Gelfand (also spelled French Guelfand) (June 24th 1968 with Minsk in RSS of Bielorussia (the USSR) -) is a player of failures. He is international Large-Master of failures Gelfand lives today in Israel where he emigrated in 1998 and has Israeli nationality.
In 1988, it finishes first ex æquo championship of the world junior. The following year, it obtains its title of GMI.
In 1989, it gains the interzonal Tournoi with Manila with Vasily Ivanchuk and is thus qualified for the Tournoi of the candidates. In 1991, it loses in quarterfinals the Tournoi of the candidates against the future winner, the English Nigel Short on the score of 3-5 (+2-4=2).
In 1993, Gelfand gains the interzonal one with Bienne and is qualified again for the Tournoi of the candidates. It beats Michael Adams in quarterfinals 5-3 (+3-1=4) with the chess tournament Corus to Wijk aan Zee in 1994, then the future world champion Vladimir Kramnik in semi-finals 4.5-3.5 (+2-1=5). It is Anatoli Karpov which finally stops Gelfand on the score of 6-3 (+1-4=4).
Then, the FIDE adopts a new formula of championship of the world with 100 or 128 players and a system cut with direct elimination. Each turn is a mini-match of two parts, the semi-finals in four parts, and the final in six parts. In 1997, Gelfand loses in semi-finals against Viswanathan Anand. In 1999, it loses against the gaining future of the tournament Alexander Khalifman. In 2000, it loses against the finalist Alexeï Chirov. In 2001, against Peter Svidler. In 2004, it is not invited, the tournament taking place in Libya, the Israeli players are not authorized to enter the country.
Its principal victories in tournament are: Moscow 1992, Back Hermanas 1994, Belgrade 1995, Vienna 1996, Polanica Zdrój 1998 and 2000, Cannes 2002, as well as Bermuda in 2005. Gelfand gained with the left Cape of Agde in 2002 the championship of the world fast.
The Olympiads of failures, he plays for the USSR in 1990, then for the Bielorussia in 1994 and 1996 and for Israel as from 2000.
Gelfand obtains its best classification on the list of FIDE in June 1991, where it is n°3 world. In October 2007, he is 11th world player and number 1 Israeli with a Classement Elo of 2736.
He qualifies in June 2007 for the Championship of the World 2007 which will be held in Mexico City by beating Rustam Kasimdzhanov then Gata Kamsky. He finishes to the 2 - 3rd place of this Championship (+3 -1 =10) behind Viswanathan Anand and ex æquo with Vladimir Kramnik, the outgoing World champion.
