Borgo

Borgo ( U Borgu in Corsican Language) is a commune of the department of the Haute-Corse and has the row of Chief town of canton.

Geography

Located in the North-East of the Corsica at approximately 15km at the South of Bastia, the commune of Borgo includes/understands the major part of its surface in plain extending up to the sea level thanks to its cord lagunaire (the Lido of Marana) which separates natural reserve from the pond of Biguglia and the Tyrrhenian Sea. The remainder of its surface is located on a broken and mountainous relief and includes/understands the historical village dominating the plain, located at 320 meters of altitude.

The commune is the center of an urban surface of small surface located at the limit of that of Bastia and including/understanding the common neighbor of Lucciana (3 700 habitans).

History

The village of Borgo was on several occasions the theater of striking facts in the history of Corsica.

In February 1738, a French task force, under the orders of the general of Boissieux unloads in Corsica on request of Génois. Claiming a disarmament of the Corsicans, the task force undergoes a bitter failure with Borgo in December 1738, called “Corsican Vespers”

October 8th, 9th and 10th 1768, the village is again the theater of resounding “the battle of Borgo ”. During nearly three days, the Corsican troops of Pascal Paoli deliver a fierce combat to the French soldiers stationed at the village. In front of the Corsican attacks, the French troops are seen forced to beat a retreat and start negotiations on October 9th. October 10th in the morning, put in rout, the French garrison of Borgo capitulates and Pascal Paoli obtains his rendering while capturing nearly 50 officers and 500 men, however higher of number and of weapons, thus blocking the projection of the troops of the Kingdom of France.

on July 31st, 1944, the aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupery flies away army ground of Borgo for its last voyage.

Battle of Borgo

With the sights of these successes, Paoli undertook to take again U Borgu, French on standby of reinforcement had been cut off there. The combat began on October 8th, 1768 in the morning and lasted 10 hours. As envisaged Large-house ran up against the rock inébranlable that were Clément Paoli and his men. Thus Borgu which had seen the defeat of the génois formerly sees the Corsican nation again triumphing. 600 died, 1000 wounded, 600 prisoners (9 guns (3 of bronze) 1 mortar 1700 rifles and ammunition were recovered by Corsican) such was the assessment of the battle.

Places and monuments

the church of the Annunciation, located at the center of the village, is a building Baroque the XVIIe century classified historic building.

With some meters of this church, a marble stele is affixed to commemorate the victory of the troops of Pascal Paoli over the armies of the Royaume of France in October 1768.
