Biography

Its birth date is unknown. It starts by controlling the counties of Barcelona and Urgell with his brother Miron (948-966). In 966, the death of his/her brother leaves it only Master of the county of Barcelona.

On this date, the County of Barcelona is culturally most advanced of the western world: the Spanish libraries inherited the ic Royaume Visigoth were enriched by knowledge by the Christians Mozarabe S fleeing persecutions by Al-mansur.

The count, astonished by intellectual faculties by Gerbert d' Aurillac, takes it along into 967 to perfect his knowledge in Catalonia. In 970 it presents it to the pope Jean XIII and to the emperor Othon {{Ier}}. Gerbert continues its rise: he will be pope from 998 to 1002 under the name of Sylvestre II).

Borell marries into 968 Leutgarde, girl of the count de Rouergue. They have 6 children: Ramòn Borell which will take its following the head of the county, Ermengaud 1st which will inherit the county of Urgell of his/her uncle Miron, Aldrie, Bonne, become abbess of St Pierre of Barcelona, Ermengarde and Riquilde.

After the bag of Barcelona by Al-Mansur in 985, Hugues Capet not sending any help, Catalonia ceases recognizing its suzerainty. It émancipe definitively of the royal capacity, but Borel II must treat with Al-Mansur. It makes rebuild the fortifications of Barcelona before dying into 992.

The Caliphate of Cordoue, mined by internal wars, needs mercenaries and the Catalans enlist massively in the Al-Mansour armies. N the other hand, Moslem gold makes the fortune of the city comtale, finally enabling him to be the capital of this Catalonia incipient and, as of the collapse of the caliphate (1009-1031), to dictate its law with the kings Moors close to Tortose or Lérida. These dissentions thus involve a period of stability favourable in Catalonia, which experiences an important technical development, demographic and cultural. This cultural push is propagated in Europe via the monastic networks and the ways of pilgrimage (Saint-Jacob de Compostelle) and commercial (Barcelona is a port open on the Mediterranean).
