Boreal Harelde

The boreal Harelde ( Clangula hyemalis ) is a plunger Canard marine of the family of the Anatidé S. It is also called Harelde de Miquelon , even Garrot de Miquelon , Fuligule de Miquelon , Canard of Miquelon , Harelde kakawi , Harelde icy , Morillon icy , Criard of winter , Petit Pintail , dériveux Pilet , Micloux , Canard with long tail of Newfoundland , Sarcelle Faroe or Canard of the ices .

Etymology

harelde would come from Icelandic havela , of Danish havlit who is the names of this bird in these languages.

Identification

It is a Canard from 41 to 60 cm length with a scale from 72 to 80 cm, heavy between 450 and 1 030 G.

The male is brown-black in summer, apart from the sides and of an ocular spot, white. In winter, it is of color blanchâtre, apart from the chest, of the wings and the facial spot, which are black. In all seasons, it has a long black frayed tail.

The female has a short tail, a dark back and a white belly.

Surface of distribution

Present in Scandinavia and Scotland. It migrates as of July to go as far as North Africa while skirting the coasts. One can find some sporadically on the alpine lakes.

Habitat

The harelde boreal niche in the Tundra. In winter, it is mainly on the marine coasts and the lagoons.

Behavior

The harelde is a not very savage bird. It is always moving, plunging unceasingly. It takes its rise easily and usually flies to the short-nap cloth of water. It flies very quickly, its speed in migration being able to reach 100 km/h.

Food mode

It is an excellent plunger. It plunges with the wings half-opened, during one minute even two, with depths from 10 to 15 meters. The record being with 60 meters on American lakes. It nourishes mainly molluscs, shellfish, small fish, of worms, even of insects during the summer.

Reproduction

The female lays one brooded per annum from 6 to 7 eggs. The nest is located close to water, on the ground, safe from the vegetation. It is usually built in a light basin and is papered sheets and feathers of the sleeping bag of the female.
