Bordj-Bou-Arreridj

Bordj-Bou-Arreridj (often shortened by BBA ) is a wilaya of Algérie, whose chief town bears the same name and who extends from the Kabylie in Sétifois (High Plains).

History, traditions and settlements

Territory located at an ethnic and geographical crossroads, the wilaya is traditionally ground of interbreeding, thus the cultures kabyle, sétifienne, and hodnaienne is côtoient.

On the historical level, the wilaya knew the passage then the installation of various civilisationnelles waves. The Roman , of which there remain many vestiges, the Hammadides, the Almohades, the Vandales, but also the Othoman and finally French conquered this area and finally settled there because in particular of its fertile grounds.

Mohamed El Mokrani, historical figure, was illustrated for the colonial period to be itself insurgent, with the support of the inhabitants of the area against the French presence. This revolt, known as “of Mokrani”, one of the first which knew the Algerian territory, was very severely repressed and gave place to many deportations towards New Caledonia, where an Algerian community exists still today.

During the War of Algeria, Bordj Bou Arreridj belonged to Wilaya III (Kabylie).

Geography

Located on the territory of the High plains, with horse on the assembly line of the Bibans, the wilaya of Bordj Bou Arreridj occupies a strategic place within the Algerian East. Indeed, it is with semi-course of the way separating Algiers from Constantine. The wilaya of Béjaïa in north, of Bouira in the west, Me Sila in the south and of Sétif in the east compose the borders of them. It is respectively located at 60 km of Sétif, 58 km of Me sila, and 100 km of Béjaia.

Chief place of the wilaya, the town of Bordj Bou Arreridj, with 900 meters of altitude, counts 155.000 inhabitants. The total population of the wilaya of Bordj Bou Arreridj is it, estimated at 640.000 inhabitants.

Its continental climate offers hot in summer and very cold temperatures in winter, among lowest of Algeria.

Relief

Three geographical areas follow one another in the wilaya:

  • an mountainous area, with in north, the chain of Bibans
  • a zone of high plains which constitutes the major part of the wilaya
  • a steppe zone, in south-west, vocation agropastorale.

Altitude varies between 302 m and 1885 Mr. annual pluviometry is there from 300 to 700 Misters the single one and principal river crossing the wilaya is the Bousselam Wadi.

Agricultural and thermal potential

Having Wilaya of many sources of water, Bordj-Bou-Arreridj records the presence of natural thermal baths, whose water is equipped with recognized healing virtues. Its more famous thermal center is l'" Hammam El Biban".

Bordj-Bou-Arreridj is moreover famous for its fertile grounds; it made the good share with the cereal culture thus a long time.

Its ovine livestock is also one of the richnesses, the meats of the area of El Achir are re-elected for their quality, an enormous market with meat is localized besides there.

Industries

Today Bordj-Bou-Arreridj is not satisfied any more agriculture, the wilaya became a young industrial pole. It appears among the most dynamic wilayas of Algeria on the matter, in particular in the sector of electronics. It was renamed by Algerian “capital of electronics”. The great groups with national dimension which are installed there testify some (Cristor, Condor, Samsung).

Bordj-Bou-Arreridj is very marked by its deprived contractors with whom it owes his development; development now relayed by the government policy.

The Algerian government sticks indeed today to the development of the area of the High Plains (Sétif - Bordj-Bou-Arreridj) through the deployment of several initiatives of scale: construction of infrastructures like the East-West highway, creation of Zones of Integrated Industrial activities etc…
