the island, until a recent past, was connected exclusively by ferry to the village of Leirvík on the island of Eysturoy. But, since April 29th, 2006, Norðoyatunnilin (the tunnel of the islands of North) allows a terrestrial connection between the village of Leirvík and that of Klaksvík, while passing under the strait of Leirvíksfjørður. This tunnel, which is longest of the archipelago with 6,300 m, passes to 150 m below the sea level. The maximum slope is of 6%. Consequently, as of the day of opening of the tunnel, the connection of ferry was removed with the profit of a line of bus which makes plusiers time per day the return ticket between Klaksvík and Tórshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands. The way lasts approximately 90 minutes (70 km).
- the island close to Viðoy is accessible by a roadway, which opened in 1963. The two tunnels with only one way were open in 1967.
- the island of Kunoy can as for it also be reached by a roadway going back to 1988.
