The term boogie-woogie has several directions:

History

The boogie-woogie is a pianistic manner to interpret the Blues. This style is characterized by an accompaniment based on the agreements of the Blues (12 measurement S) and played in ostinato (eighth note point-double eighth note) inlassablement repeated with the left hand ( eight-to-tea-bar ) while with the right hand the pianist embroiders variations improvised on the harmonic screen of the Blues.

The first specialists in the boogie-woogie made known themselves in the surroundings of Chicago and with Kansas City in the Années 1920. Among them, one can quote Jimmy Blythe, the first to record a boogy in 1924 ( Chicago Stomp ), but also CowCow Davenport, Jimmy Yancey, Cripple Clarence Lofton, Charles Avery, Charlie Spand, Montana Taylor and especially Clarence “Pinetop” Smith, best of the time. It was on a disc of the latter ( Pinetop' S Boogie Woogie ) recorded in 1928 that for the first time at many people the term boogie-woogie appeared.

In the Years 1930, helped in their promotion by the producing John Hammond, emerged the superpowers of this style of piano blues: Meade Lux Lewis ( Honky Tonk Train Blues ), Albert Ammons ( Boogie Woogie Stomp ) and Pete Johnson ( Roll 'EM Pete ). Then appeared also Sammy Price, Memphis Slim, Loyd Glenn, Jay McShann.

The boogy obtained such a success in the Années 1940 that very good pianist of Jazz was to integrate one or two boogies in its repertory. Thus Count Basie ( Boogie Woogie ), Earl Hines ( Boogie Woogie One St Louis Blues ), Art Tatum ( St Louis Blues ), Mary Lou Williams ( Roll 'EM ), Lionel Hampton and Milt Buckner ( Hamp' S Boogie Woogie ), etc Certains Big band S is reflected there in their turn with percussion and well packed arrangements, such Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey, Lionel Hampton, etc and in particular the saxophonist and singer Louis Jordan and his Tympany Five which obtained a colossal popular success with Choo Choo Ch' Boogie . The boogy was also adapted to the song (Ella Fitzgerald & The Ink Spots, Cow Cow Boogie ) or the guitar (T-Bone Walker, T-Bone Boogie ).

The tradition of the boogie-woogie remained. It remains very alive in the Blues of Chicago and in some contemporary pianists who specialize in all or partly in this style. Thus, the boogie-woogie appears with the wire of time like a bluesy mode of expression of an obvious dynamism and very swinguant. The rate/rhythm boogie-woogie strongly influenced the beginnings of Rock “roll. More recently, the Australian guitarist Tommy Emmanuel gave a more modern version and all in virtuosity of the boogie-woogie to the Guitare. Nowadays, certain rock groups like Canned Heat or AC/DC also claim boogy, although the bond with this musical style is difficult to establish.
