Bonosus

Bonosus (Gallus Quintus Bonosus), is a Usurpateur Roman born in Hispanie, it proclaims emperor in 280 with Cologne but is beaten by the emperor Probus. Only the Histoire Auguste gives of it a biography, indicated below, criticized by André Chastagnol.

Wire of a Rhéteur, Bonosus was useful under Claude, combatant the Goths at its sides. The emperor Aurélien, successor of Claude, gave the responsability Bonosus to establish contacts with the goths and to inform it about their intentions. It is on this occasion that he married Hunilla, girl of a goth chief.

Thereafter, the Aurélien emperor, entrusted to Bonosus the command of the fleet of the Rhine (the latter was charged to ensure the maritime security of the Brittany). However, one night of the year 280, the German ones emerged by surprised and set fire to the Roman ships.

Bonosus proclaimed emperor to avoid the punishment of this fault. Probus ordered to the commanders thestrong neighbouring ones to go against the usurper. Bonosus was demolishes and hung despair in 281 (Probus saved the lives of his wife and its sons).

According to the author of the History Auguste, Bonosus would have been a large wine amateur: Whatever was the quantity of wine which he drank, he was always calm, kept all his good sense, and even (…), it was shown then expect that with jeun. What was surprising in him, it is that it urinated as much as it drank, and that never it did not test pains with the stomach, the intestines or the bladder . “This man was not born to live, but for drinking” would have even said the Aurélien emperor.

Andre Chastagnol, translator and commentator of the History Auguste, regards as pure fabrication the indications of the History Auguste on the marriage with Hunila and qualities of drinker of Bonosus. Chastagnol sees even in this “sober intoxication” the subtle parody of a topic put in vogue by the Christian apologists of which Ambroise of Milan, on the sobriety of the mystics and their apparent intoxication in their religious enthusiasm.

The numismatist Henri Cohen announces the scarcity of the monetary emissions of Bonosus, limited to his knowledge with two single medals in Billon, and considers that apart from these two specimens, there does not exist authentic part. These medals confirm nevertheless the historical existence of Bonosus.
