Bonnieux
Bonnieux is a common French, located in the department of Vaucluse and the area Provence-Alp-Coast of Azure. One calls his inhabitants the Bonnieulais .
Geography
Bonnieux is a beautiful perched village located on the northern slope of the Massif of Luberon, between the Large one and Small Luberon, vis-a-vis the village of Lacoste. It orders the northern entry of the combe of Lourmarin, only passage which crosses it while separating it into two (Large and Small Luberon, but all two resulting from the same mountainous solid mass).
The village being very sloping, one can benefit from a very beautiful sight on small Luberon and, in north, the plates of the Monts of Vaucluse.
One reaches it since Avignon by the Trunk road 100, D 36 and D 194. The northern and western part of the commune corresponds to the arable lands of the plain. In the east, one finds the plate of Claparèdes. Lastly, in the south Luberon (combe of Lourmarin, forest of the cedars, etc).
The commune is surrounded by Roussillon in north, Apt in the north-eastern east, Buoux in the east, Lourmarin in the south, Lacoste in the west and Goult in the North-West.
History
In 3 before JC, the Pont Julien (Way Domitienne) is built.
One with the trace, the 6th century, of the foundation of a Monastery on the site of the pagan Temple of Mithra.
In 972, the village has already a fortress and walls.
Cité in 1103 " Castrum Bonils" , the village was abandoned at the 13th century, the inhabitants taking refuge under the Château of Agoult and being surrounded of an enclosure, Bonnieux undoubtedly becoming then a commandery of the Templiers.
At the beginning of the 14th century, the commune becomes pontifical ground and until the September 14th 1791 will remain it. This membership of the pontifical field in fact an enclave in the grounds of the Count de Provence, and gives him of this fact a special place in the history of the area.
The August 12th 1793, Bonnieux, is transferred from the Rhone delta to the Vaucluse.
The November 14th 1887, Bonnieux, like all the Luberon sector, is touched by an earthquake. The June 11th 1909, a new earthquake strikes all the Provence and is also perceived in Luberon.

Local economy
The Tourism, as for all the top-places of north Luberon (Gordes, Ménerbes, Lacoste, Roussillon…), is an important part of the activity. Architectural variety and the floristic diversity of the place (whose plate of Claparèdes, forest of the cedars) facilitated this development of tourism.
Agriculture, in the plain, is centered enough on the vine (wines in AOC Côtes of Luberon).
There exists a Marché of farm products and seasonal workers Friday morning.
