Bonnevaux is a common French, located in the department of the Gard and the area Languedoc-Roussillon.

Geography

Bonnevaux is a small commune of Montagne of 102 inhabitants located at the North-East of the the Cevennes gardoises, at the limit of the Ardèche and Lozere.

The village and the Hameau X of Schiste knew to preserve their typically Cevennes character and cling to the sides of the valley of 400m with 750m of Altitude.

History

The foundation of Bonnevaux dates from the year 650. At that time, a congregation of monk persecuted by the Sarrazin S took refuge in these moved back regions favourable with the prayer. They built a monastery there. The place is known under name occitane Abadié (the abbey).

These monks of the orde of Ruf Saint were the craftsmen of the development of the country which they cleared and cultivated by creating meadows, arable lands and the first Châtaigne lines. They made build at the 11th century a Chapelle at the village of Bonnevaux (it is the parochial church today). The large ones of the church lived Abadié a few years, there to study and request, in particular Clément III.

After one long period of decline, Bonnevaux knows since nearly 30 years a true revival: installation of farmers, restoration of the church of XIe century, creation of Lodging S, development of the built and landscape inheritance.

Demography

Places and monuments

  • In the high part of the village of Bonnevaux, the church Saint Théodorit built by the Moine S of Abadié in XIe century is a splendid work of Romance Style. It is surmounted in the west by a Clocher with four arcades, prolonging the wall of the frontage from where emergent eleven carved heads.
