Boniface 1st , 42e Pope (419 - 422).
With died of the pope Zosime, the December 26th 418, the party of the Diacre S elects to succeed to him the archdeacon Eulalien, the December 27th. However, the 28, the priest S choose one as of their, which becomes Boniface {{Ier}}. It results from it that, the December 29th the two men are crowned each one on their side.
To solve the question, the emperor Honorius convenes a synod with Ravenne the February 8th 419 and interdict with the two applicants to enter the town of Rome. In fact, the hesitant synod leaves the decision to the emperor. As this one seems to take its time, Eulalien impatient and penetrates in the city of Rome to celebrate there the ceremonies of Easter. The troops of Honorius intervene then to install Boniface, while Eulalien is comforted with one évêché in Campanie (it dies there without stories in 423). To avoid the renewal of the problem, Honorius promulgates an ordinance laying out that in the event of double election, none of the two elected officials is pope, but who one would proceed to the election of a third.
The choice of Boniface is rather happy, because it restores the pontifical dignity chipped by its predecessor. It withdraws its mandate with Patrocle of Arles, named by Zosime métropolite of the provinces of Vienna and Narbonne. This reassures the Gallic clergy. He manages to convince the emperor of the East, Théodose {{II}}, to return to the jurisdiction of Rome the province of Illyrie, whereas he previously gave it to the Patriarche of Constantinople.
He is the author of decrees prohibiting to the women, were they nuns, touch the linens crowned (including washing them) or to come to the furnace bridge to burn Encens there. He also prohibits the slaves from becoming clerks.
He dies the September 4th 422. He is regarded as Saint by the Catholic church. He is celebrated on September 4th.
