Boniface Alexandre (born in 1936) was president of Haiti of 2004 to 2006. Following the resignation of the president Jean-Bertrand Aristide on February 29th, 2004, Alexandre, like chair Supreme court and thus first character of the State after the president then took up this duty.

Alexandre was born in Ganthiers commune of Port-au-Prince. He is the elder one of an big family. His/her father Maudin Alexandre was stockbreeder and the patriarch of a family of eleven children. He inculcated to him the values of honesty and justice. He became lawyer and worked during twenty-five years with the cabinet Lamarre, a law firm of Port-au-Prince specialized in the contracts of business and the payment of the divorces.

In the Nineties, Alexandre was named with the Supreme court of Haiti and in 2002, president Jean-Bertrand Aristide named it with the head of Justice. At this station, it acquired a reputation of equity in a system largely considered as corrupted. He promised to fight the incompetence and the corruption of the Haiti courts

April 25th, 2003, Alexandre was made citizen of honor of Lafayette, in Louisiana. He also teaches at the university of Port-au-Prince.

Boniface Alexandre assumed the Haiti presidency a few hours after the deportation of president Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Alexandre lent oath the morning of February 29th, 2004 at the time of a short ceremony to the residence of the Prime Minister Yvon Neptune.

Although Alexandre occupies the president's functions, the Haitian constitution in its article 149 requires that it be confirmed by the Haitian Parliament which did not meet since January 2004 when the majority of its members arrived at the end of their mandate. According to the Haitian constitution, new presidential elections must be held between 40 and 90 days after the resignation of Aristide and Alexandre, as a president in function, will not be able to present its candidature.

In spite of the strong bonds that Alexandre maintained with the former president, he was not member of the Lavalas party. Following its accession with the presidency, political opponents of Aristide suggested that it was too close to the old mode and that as a chief of justice, it did not do enough effort to accentuate the independence of the court compared to the executive branch of the government.

One of the first acts posed by Alexandre as a president was to send an official request to the Safety advice of the United Nations ask for a multinational force of maintenance of peace to restore the order in Haiti. The Safety advice quickly approved the request.

Although rebellious leaders, in it including Guy Philippe, marked their will to work with Alexandre, of the American civils servant minimized the importance of Alexandre in the resolution of the Haitian conflict, qualifying the administration of Alexandre of government of the go concern.

Alexandre was officially invested on March 8th. In its first presidential discourse, it called with " national reconciliation, establishment of a climate of peace and safety for all, an emergency plan against the hunger and poverty and for the improvement of the care of santé." Gerard Latortue was parachuted Prime Minister on March 10th to replace Yvon Neptune.

During the presidential interim, Charlotte Alexandre, the grand-daughter of Alexandre, 16 month old drowned accidentally in a bath of the presidential palace. Alexandre has four children.
