Bonaventure Island

The Île Bonaventure is located at 3,5 km off the village of Percé, at the end of the peninsula gaspésienne, with the Quebec.

Of a surface of 4,16 km ², it constitutes with the Rocher bored distant of 5 km in north, the National park of Island-Bonaventure-and-of-Rock-Bored. The island lodges the second more important colony of gannet in the world.

History

The Bonaventure island was one of the first sites of seasonal fishing of the News-France, associated with the family of Nicolas Denys. The island became then the property of the Anglo-Norman fisheries of the Leboutillier brothers. In 1919, it acquired the statute of sanctuary for birds after the signature of Convention on the migratory birds between Canada and the United States. The province of Quebec acquired of the whole of the island in 1971 re-electing it National park of Island-Bonaventure-and-of-Rock-Bored in 1985. It is one of largest and the most accessible ornithological reserves to the world with more 280  000 birds. The Bonaventure island is a major tourist destination. Three ships give access the island in day from May October and to make the turn of it.

The old Canadian aircraft carrier, the HMCS Bonaventure was named according to this island.

Birds

Birds of 293 different species were indexed like species of passage, migrant or permanent on the island. The most represented is the Gannet . The island shelters the second larger colony the gannet in the world with more than 30.000 couples. The other populations of birds are that of the Kittiwake and that of the Guillemot marmette. The Seagull, the Tern, the Guillemot with mirror, others alcidés, the Gull herring, the marine Seagull, the Penguin torda, the petrel-tempète with white bottom, the Large Cormorant, the Cormorant with brushes, the Puffin monk, the titmouse with brown head and the warbler of the new world can also beings observed with Bonaventure.
