Bomber-destroyer
A bomber-destroyer is a bomber designed mainly to attack Navire S or Sous-marin S with Torpille S. That requires a long bomb bay or a particular installation under the fuselage to transport the machine, which explains why there exists a type of particular plane for this task.
The bomber-destroyers were used especially until the Second world war. During this war, they played a big role for example against the German Sous-marin S as at the time of battles as the attack of Tarente by English or the attacks Japanese on Pearl Harbor.
The bomber-destroyers practically disappeared at the end from the Second world war, replaced by:
- the planes of maritime patrol and the Helicopter S for the anti-submarine Fight
- of the planes multirôles equipped with anti-ship missiles for the anti-ship fight
Some important bomber-destroyers of the Second world war:
-
Douglas TBD Devastator
- Grumman TBF Avenger
- Fairey Swordfish
- Fairey Barracuda
- Savoia-Marchetti SM.79 Sparviero
- Nakajima B5N Kate
