Bolzano

Bolzano (in Italian) or Bozen (in German) is a city of the Haut-Adige (or the Tyrol of the South), pertaining to the Italy, chief town of the province of Bolzano and belonging to the autonomous region of the Trentin-Haut-Adige, in the north of the Plaine of Po.

Bolzano is a bilingual city of approximately: 100000 inhabitants inhabitants in 2006. The three-quarters of the communal population are of Italian language. The quarter remaining is German-speaking.

Administration

The municipal council, elected official the May 8th 2005 was suspended because it was unable to indicate the executive (the junta) in the terms envisaged by the law. This caused the forfeiture of the elected mayor, with only 7 votes in advance, Giovanni Benussi. Blow, the administration of the city was directed by the police chief Maria Serena Pompili who exerted the functions of mayor, junta and municipal council, helped by three assistant police chiefs (Francesca De Carlini, Gerardo Caroli, Hermann Berger).

At the time of the following elections of the November 6th 2005, the inhabitants of Bolzano gave the victory to the center-left (the Union) in the person of Luigi Spagnolli (the Marguerite) which obtained, as of the 1st turn, 50,36% of the voices, the candidate of the Maison of freedoms not having obtained this time 45,20% of the voices. One of the innovations of these elections is that the 1st party is not any more National alliance (YEAR, 9 seats) but the Südtiroler Volkspartei (PLEASE) (11 seats), with 21,85% of the voices. The German-speaking ones account for 26% of the population of the city. PLEASE, for the first time, had presented among its candidates, a candidate italophone, which is also a first.
