Conventions

Alphabetical order

  1. the type-setters are classified alphabetically family name, except in the case of certain type-setters of before the Renaissance, where the order is made according to the first name (p. e.g. Bernart de Ventadorn, Guiraut Riquier).
  2. family names begin with the particle Mac or Mc all are regarded as if they were written Mac .
  3. family names which one familiarly finds according to several orthographies can be identified in a place in the form Orthographe attends to see conventional Orthographe (p. e.g. Shostakovitch, Dmitri to see Chostakovitch, Dmitri)

Establishment of the name of the type-setters

  1. According to the orthography of origin, when the language employs the Latin alphabet.
  2. According to the orthography of the language of adoption of the type-setter, in the case of certain type-setters having emigrated (p. e.g. George Frideric Handel rather than Georg Friedrich Händel).
  3. For the names in Cyrillic alphabet, except the type-setters naturalized abroad, where the use of the language of adoption is undoubtedly preferable (p. e.g. Igor Stravinski), one would undoubtedly have favors to possibly apply the Translittération names according to standard ISO9: 1995. For the moment, however, the majority of these names are presented here in a French-speaking form wanting to be rather widespread (p. e.g. Alexandre Borodine).

Birth dates and of death

  1. the dubious dates are preceded by the word towards
  2. the unknown dates make place with the expressions dead (E) in or born (E) in .
  3. the abbreviation fl. ( floruit ) indicates that the dates relate to the time when the type-setter was active.
