the Portet-on-Garonne (occitan: Portèth de Garona ) is a common French, located in the department of the Haute-Garonne and the area the Midday-Pyrenees.
Its inhabitants is called Portésiens.

Geography

History
The origin of the name of the Portet-on-Garonne
The village was called Portellum Xe in XVe century. It became Portel at the beginning XVIe century, then Portet at the XVIIe century. It is only in 1921, that the village will take the name of the Portet-on-Garonne . These names come from Latin " portus" who indicates a passage (a ford crossed the Garonne).

Places and monuments
Located in an old building of the Concentration camp of the Récébédou , the Musée accommodates a permanent Exposition, reconstitutions, a conference room and an temporary exhibition. It also allows the consultation on the spot certain treating number of works more particularly of the camps of internment. The Museum of the Memory was inaugurated on February 6th 2003 by Elie Wiesel, Nobel Prize of Peace and François Peraldi, Maire and General adviser of the Portet-on-Garonne. Place of memory before all the Museum wants to be also educational tools with the service of the children and all those which are thirsty for knowledge.- the Halle

Festival the Mediterranean de Portet a Festival of music with a panorama of artists of various Mediterranean countries: musics popular, original, modern, festive everywhere in the city, but also a greedy village. The festival takes place every year since 2005 about on September 22nd.
