Bojitch

Bojitch is, at the Slaves south, a character of the beginning of the Hiver.

It is mentioned in the koliadki (ritual songs). Its symbol is a stag with the gold wood; it marks the beginning of the new solar cycle (Winter solstice. Badniak (the last year) burns in fire whereas Bojitch (new year) brings the revival of the sun, the rebirth of spring, the renovation of nature.

This tradition was recovered by orthodoxe Christianity and Bojitch (Božić) is the name given at the Croatian Serbes and to the festival of Christmas.
