Bohuslän

The Bohuslän is one of the 24 historical provinces ( landskap ) of the Sweden on the Western coast of the country, extending from the north of Gothenburg to the Norway. Its main city is Uddevalla. Today, the province of Bohuslän is included/understood in the county of Götaland of the west ( Västra Götalands län ).

The province is limited to North by the Norway, in the North-East by the province of the Dalsland, in the South by the province of Västergötland and in the West by the Skagerrak.

The province, hitherto Norwegian, was delivered by the Denmark to the Sweden to the Traité of Roskilde of the February 26th 1658.

Bohuslän means “stronghold of Bohus”. Indeed, the strong main thing which defended the province of the Swedish attacks is the Fort of Bohus ( Bohus fästning ) and län results in “stronghold”.

Bohuslän benefitted fully from the rise of fishing to the Hareng during the 17th century. The fishing is always an activity important, but exceeded today by the Tourisme. Indeed, the coast on Skagerrak is bordered of multiple islands and very attractive reefs.

It shelters approximately 20  000 rupestral engravings of which those of Tanum dated from the beginning of the Bronze Age (1500-500 av. J. - C.) and classified with the world heritage of UNESCO.
