Bocas del Toro (province)

Bocas del Toro is a province of the Panama. Its capital is the town of Bocas del Toro, located on the island of Colonist. The population of the province is approximately 89.300 inhabitants. Its surface is of 8.745 kilometers and it is made up of 9 principal islands. One finds there many plantations of Banane plantain, often called the green gold ( oro verde ) of the Central America.

Districts

The province is divided into several districts (between bracket, their capital):
  1. Bocas del Toro (Bocas del Toro): it was created in 1855. It includes/understands the towns of Bocas del Toro, Bastimentos, Cauchero, Punta Laurel and Tierra Oscura. It has a surface of 430 km ².

  2. Changuinola (Changuinola): it was created in 1903. It includes/understands the towns of Changuinola, Almirante, Guabito, Teribe, Valle del Risco, El Empalme and Las Counted. It has a surface of 208 km ².
  3. Chiriquí Large (Chiriquí Large): it was created in 1970. It includes/understands the towns of Chiriqui Grande, Miramar, Punte Peña, Punta Robalo and Rambala. It has a surface of 4.005 km ².

History

Christophe Colomb, in the search of a passage towards the Pacific Ocean, explored this area in 1502. Colomb gave the name of Isla del Drago (island with the Dragon) to the island. For the colonial period, Bocas del Toro belonged to the province of Veraguas. For the period of union with the Colombia, gouverenment a district of Bocas del Toro in 1834 created. In 1850, Bocas del Toro became integral part of Chiriquí, then was separate to be attached to the province of Colón. The November 16th 1903, Bocas del Toro was separated from the province of Colonist and became a province in itself. Into 1941, Bocas del Toro was divided into 2 districts, Bocas del Toro and Crimamola. In 1970, the district of Boca del Toro became Changuinola, the district of Bastimentos disappeared and 3 new districts were added. The limits of the districts were again modified in 1997, when the comarque one of Ngöbe-Bugle was created.
