History
Bobigny draws its name from Balbinius , name of a Roman former general which created a villa in old the Forêt of Bondy. The name evolved/moved in Balbiniacum then in Baubigny then Bobigny.
The human presence in this place as of the Gallic time is attested by the discovery of an archeological site to the locality “the Cow at Ease”. The Fouille S put at the day a Gallic statue of fourth century BC, first discovered in France.
To the the Middle Ages, the territory belongs partly to the lords of Livry and to the Abbaye of Saint-Denis. The village is composed of a castle, a church and some modest dwellings of peasants. Some noble big families follow one another during the centuries: Perdriel at the 16th century and 17th century, Jacquier de Vieumaison at the 18th century, which have a castle.
In 1789, Bobigny becomes a small commune of two hundred hearts, living primarily of the cereal culture. In 1870, at the time of the seat of Paris, the commune is entirely destroyed. The population takes refuge in Paris, whereas the Prussian invade the ruins of the village. The Ferret abbot reports: The majority of the houses have neither roof any more, nor floor; the church is absolutely battered. In the street, it rains tiles and chimney flues .
The arrival of the Railroad at the end of the 19th century, brings a new rise to the commune. The market-gardening village becomes a working city with the installation of companies calling upon a strong labor. The housing shortage brings the construction of several allotments. As of 1920, the inhabitants elect communist municipalities, and the city forms integral part of the “red suburbs” of Paris.
In 1933, Bobigny becomes famous for the high tower of the workshops of the newspaper the Illustration , installed in the middle of the cultivated fields. The city is besides at that time one of the rare market-gardening cities of the area, having resisted industrialization. From now on, IUT of Bobigny occupies the site of the old printing works of the newspaper. In the same way, just beside this IUT (a few tens of meters) the Medical college of Bobigny, also named is established FR Léonard de Vinci. The building even of the Illustration is used by the first-year students of medicine (PCEM1), because they have course in the R600 amphitheater there since 2006.
During the Second world war, fifteen thousand Juifs will leave the station of Bobigny towards the camp of Auschwitz. The place became since a memorial.
In one decade, of 1954 with 1964, population of double Bobigny, passing from: 18500 with: 37000 inhabitants. This fast increase brings the installation of a vast program of construction of equipment and social housing:
In 1954, Georges Candilis builds the Emmaüs city of Étoile

In 1958, Charles-Gustave Stoskopf, Arthur Heaume and Alexandre Persitz carry out the city of the Bridge-of-Pierre.
January 1st 1968, Bobigny becomes the chief town of the new department of the Seine-Saint-Denis with the creation of the department S of the small-crown. The prefecture is built in 1971. In October and November 1972 took place the Procès of Bobigny, lawsuit of minor having fallen through after a rape, which became a platform for the women's right and the de-penalization of the Avortement. In 1978 the appearance of UFO in the city of the friendship is related in imaginary the balbynien to the multiplication of known personalities of whole France coming from Bobigny. More seriously, it should be noted that Bobigny remains impossible to circumvent in the characterization of the phenomenon suburbs and more precisely of the “neuf-trois”.
The subway arrives at Bobigny in 1985, the tram in 1992 and the has 86 is inaugurated in 1998 by Jean-Claude Gayssot, former deputy of Bobigny and then Ministre for the Equipment, Transport and Housing.
At this beginning of 21e century, the municipality sets up of many projects for the future, in particular the rehabilitation of residences by the destruction of some towers and their replacement by new constructions on more human scale, or a “City of the Earth” devoted to the environment and the Sustainable development on banks of the channel.
At the time of the urban riots of November 2005, the city, chief town of the department where violences started, was relatively preserved, situation which the municipality explains by the frequent meetings of districts and the many structures of dialog installation since 1998. Nevertheless, the city has a high rate of criminality for the Seine-Saint-Denis, and among highest of France, the town hall tries to limit violence and to encourage the dialog by the multiplication of the meetings of district and the organization of “sat city” with the inhabitants every two years.
