The trademark of the team is their shirt with white and black checkerwork. Estádio C Bessa, their stage, was built in 1973 and was renovated for the Euro 2004. In-house, Boavista passed from a minor team in the Seventies to a team which plays Europe regularly nowadays. The first threat, with the three large usual clubs, for the title take place at the time of season 1975-76 pennies the command of Jose Maria Pedroto, where Boavista finishes second, and republished this performance in 1998-99. Finally, in 2000-01 Boavista the SuperLiga against the rivals of FC Oporto gained, but did not succeed in keeping its title, finishing second behind the Sporting in 2002. Boavista also gained five cuts of Portugal (74-75, 75-76, 78-79, 91-92 and 96-97)
In Europe, Boavista was known like the club with the strange shirts, and succeeds of great matches, beating the Inter Milan and the ACE Roma with the beginning of the year 1990. The culminating point of their European history was the course in UEFA Cup in 2003, where they were beaten in semi-finals by the Celtic in Estádio C Bessa. During the UEFA Cup 1990-1991, Boavista succeeds in beating it Inter Milan 2-1 in hen match. At the time of the UEFA Cup 1981-1982 Boavista eliminated the Atlético from Madrid 5-4. At the time of the UEFA Cup 1993-1994, Boavista arrived in quarterfinals after having beaten the Greek club of OFI Crete and the Lazio. At the time of the UEFA Cup 1986-1987, Boavista beats the big favorite, the Fiorentina but loses against the Rangers in a match tended at the time of the second round to the Ibrox Stadium.
Boavista took part twice in the Ligue of the Champions. After the first participation in 1999, Boavista surprised Europe in 2001 by beating and eliminating the Borussia Dortmund. During the hen phase, the club started as well as possible with a tie 1-1 with Liverpool after having carried out 0-1 thanks to a goal of Elpidio Silva. They reached the first place of the group after the second match, with a victory 3-1 in residence against the Dynamo Kiev and thanks to the tie between Liverpool and Dortmund. They approached their third match as a leader of the group, a meeting in residence against Borussia Dortmund and once again it was a victory 2-1. At the time of the return matches, they had more problems and lost in Germany, then made tie against Liverpool and lost in Ukraine at the time of the last match. However, the beautiful performances carried out during this hen phase made it possible the club to reach the second round. At the time of this second phase they were opposed to two large European clubs Manchester United and the Bayern Munich. With their financial objectives largely filled, new horizons open for the team when it surprised Nantes in residence by gaining 1-0, and by atteigant the head of the group after no one between Manchester United and Bayern Munich. At the time of the second match, Boavista was crushed 3-0 by Manchester United with Old Trafford but they made a success of tie 0-0 in residence against Bayern Munich, while having even been able to carry it at the end of the match. Whereas it started the return matches of this second phase, Boavista was only at one point of the second qualificative place, however that changed after the defeat in Munich 1-0, Manchester gained 5-1 against Nantes. After no one in Nantes, they were once more beaten 3-0 by United, this time in residence. Although they did not pass this turn, they were the Portuguese team which made the best European course this year. At the time of season 2002/2003, in UEFA Cup, Boavista beats the Maccabi Haïfa, the Hertha BSC Berlin and the Paris Saint-Germain at the time of a very tended match which failed to be arrété because of riots caused by supporters of Boavista, but finally Boavista was beaten by the future finalist Celtic FC in Estadio C Bessa in semi-final. The large rivals of the FC Oporto gained the competition.
The club has a reputation, in Portugal and for much of teams in Europe, of aggressive style, playing with beacoup of determination. Boavista is a very hard-working team, and the principal example of this quality is the national title, where the team had the best defense of the championship, and one of the best attacks. After the semi-final of UEFA Cup, the team started to play a gravitational football, which lasted the two following years. This image started to change after Jaime Pacheco was replaced by Carlos Brito at the time of the season 2005-2006, but later Jaime Pacheco returned to replace Jesualdo Ferreira.
The principal rival of Boavista is the FC Oporto. The matches between the two teams are very aggressive, even more in Estádio C Bessa. Boavista knows also a large competition with Belenenses and Vitória Guimarães.
The female team is one of strongest, having gained many successive titles at the time of the years 1990.
