Boatman

The boatman or marine is a person whose trade is to lead a river Bateau, a Péniche sailing on the Réseau of the inland waterways interior (lakes, channels and rivers). Very good expert, it generally lives on board, under difficult conditions, the space of life in these boats being generally measured with the profit of the hold (and thus of the commercial Fret).

Very old profession appeared with navigation on the rivers, to say as much at the dawn of humanity and the trade, it evolved/moved notably with the appearance of the channels which led the whole families to settle on board boat. Very important corporation during many centuries because of its important role in the supply of the areas goods of all kinds, and also in passenger transport, it became, with the development of the railroad then of the road, the fact of a small number of people living in a a little marginal way, while being on ground and water at the same time. The slow voyages, often long, a long time moved away the children from education and now, with the Internat S, their parents. The living conditions were difficult until the middle of the XXe century. Nowadays, new technologies, and in particular Internet, brought this population much closer to " people; of with terre".

The film of Jean Vigo Atalante and the television serial the Man of Picardy (1968) are two illustrations, more or less realistic, of this profession. First however is very dated, and does not have great any more a deal to currently see with the trade. The second is very interesting in the sense that it is located at the hinge between the shipping traditional which must carry out a change to survive, incarnated by Joseph Durtol (Christian Barbier, one of his best roles) and the future which passes by the large gauge, that personifies the son Durtol (Pierre Santini in one of its first roles). The professionals see in this serial, from which a video box then a DVD was drawn, a good illustration of their trade.

Foot-note: the word " batelier" is rather employed in the south of France. North and the center employ the term of " rather; marinier".

Great patron saint of the marines and boatmen is, in France, holy Nicolas. But one finds also, on a regional level, the worships of Saint Roch, Saint Are (or Arigle), holy Clément, Saint Thibault, Sainte Philomène, Sainte Honorine and Sainte Marie. In Spain, it is Saint Telme.

Formation

In Belgium, it is enough to pass an examination organized by the state. The formation in the Belgian specialized schools lasts four years and makes it possible to the candidates to obtain the various titles of navigation.
