The Blues , in the past Auckland Blues, are a New Zealand frankness from Rugby , based with Auckland. They represent the teams of NPC of Auckland, North Harbor and Northland. They take part in the Super 14.
History
When SANZAR decided in the manner of constituting manpower of the teams of Super 12, it was estimated that to base the manpower of the Blues on those of the teams of Auckland, Counties Manukau, Northland and North Harbor would be unfair, because of the strong proportion of All Blacks coming from Auckland, Counties Manukau and North Harbor. In fact the Blues could almost have aligned the team of the All Blacks, except for the name. This led Northland and North Harbor has to feed the manpower of the other frankness nearest: the Chiefs. Consequently, Auckland Blues did not represent Auckland completely since North Harbor corresponds only to the northern part of the urban surface of Auckland. The Blues inherited on the other hand Thames Valley, however much nearer to Hamilton than of Auckland.
Towards end of the year 90, the number of All Blacks coming from these teams fell, mainly because of the departures to the retirement of players like Sean Fitzpatrick. This allowed the Blues and the Chiefs to get along for an exchange in which the Chiefs allocated Counties Manukau and Thames Valley while the Blues recovered Northland and North Harbor.
This nevertheless was regarded as an inequitable exchange being given the performances of Northland and North Harbor, at the time of the years preceding the exchange, were much better than those of Counties Manukau and Thames Valley. That at least made it possible to obtain franknesses as well as possible representing the geographical space of which they are claimed.
Ironically however, the Blues lost on this occasion the territory indicated popularly like Auckland-South, which belongs to the urban surface of Auckland. One can thus say that the Blues exchanged Auckland-South against Auckland-North, and that consequently, the Blues still do not represent the whole of the area of Auckland such as suggested it their initial name. In 2000, the New Zealand franknesses from the Super 12 gave up any regional reference in their official name.
The team of Auckland, which provides the large majority of the players of the Blues, is by far the most powerful team in the New Zealand domestic competition: NPC. They were 14 times champions of the first division since the inauguration of this competition in 1976.
