Blue whale

The blue whale (or “blue Fin-back whale” ) is one of largest animals the having ever lived on Earth (26 to 30 meters and 190 ton S, even 200 tons).

Only the Dinosaure S approached its size.

It is a species considered today as threatened, which has regressed much for one century because of the intensive hunting which was made with the whales. Within the whales with pennons, or mysticètes, the blue whale is longest.

Lifestyle

She lives in warm water and tropical in period of reproduction (she gives rise to only one “small” of almost 7 meters length and 3 tons). But she emigrates regularly worms of colder water while crossing all planet almost.

She nourishes mainly Krill as many others Baleine S. She likes also the Plancton (small shrimps which move in benches) and of shellfish, but does not refuse small fish (like Sardine S).

Its mouth contains effective Fanon S which make it possible the whale to absorb thousands of liters of sea water and food. The pennons are - more precisely - long plates (one meter length) which end in long thick hairs. This complex filter can retain the plankton of several tons of water in only one mouthful. The whale uses then its language to recover food thus collected.

One estimated at 200.000 to 300.000, the number of the blue whales at the beginning of the 20th century. At the time one only season of hunting in the years 1930, one could count: 30000 blue whales killed in the Antarctic. The restrictions, as drastic as they are, were certainly taken too late and it is not certain that these whales are saved extinction. The southern populations are estimated at less: 5000 individuals but there remains probably nothing any more but 2000 to 3000 alive individuals.
