History

Blue Öyster Cult is formed in 1970 with Long Island under the impulse of two journalists rock'n'roll, Sandy Pearlman and Richard Meltzer, members of an rock group psychedelic " The Cows" created three years earlier. But each member of the future BÖC has already a musical past within his college or of his university before their happy meeting.

All starts when Bruce Abbott (future joint author of old Golden off leather ) introduces Donald Roeser to Albert Bouchard. They found a first " group; The Disciples" who will become the following year " Travesty" , groups which foam the evenings coeds and limp them local so much so that their members their studies forsake and are devoted from now on entirely to the music.

" Travesty" splitte, Donald remains with Island Length while Bouchard leaves for Chicago where it received some engagements. But Donald makes the meeting of the critic rock'n'roll Sandy Pearlman and finds Bouchard returned to New York: new a combo is formed, with a new musician, Allen Lanier. Pearlman baptizes it " Software White Underbelly".

The group turns more and more, ensuring the first parts of Muddy Waters and Greateful Dead, but an obviousness is essential: it misses a singer… Braustein then joined the group whose word of mount says the largest good. The president d' Elektra Records the remark at the time of a concert and the sign instantaneously, probably very attracted by…

At the beginning of 1969 Software White Underbelly enters in studio to record its first album for Elektra, but of the divergences They oppose to the other members of the group: it leaves them whereas the album quasi-is finished. Elektra, opposed departure of the singer on whom all had been put, auditions then Eric Bloom, an old knowledge Island Length and decides to finish the production of the album.

With the departure of Braustein and the Bloom arrival, the group changes name again and becomes " Stalk Forrest Group". Sandy Pearlman then imagines to give a name of scene to each member: only Donald Roeser accepts, one will know it from now on under the pseudonym of Buck Dharma.

After some concerts, Elektra decides to break their contract, Andy Winters leaves the group then and is replaced by Joe Bouchard, the brother of Albert. In 1970 Stalk Forrest Group in the open air gives a great concert which wakes up the curiosity of the Columbia recording company: an new agreement is signed, it is thus necessary, according to the Pearlman tradition, to find a new name with the group: Blue Öyster Cult.

They become a group with success during this decade, in particular thanks to the title Don' T fear the reaper in 1976. Under the impulse of their mentors and producers of the beginnings, Sandy Pearlman and Murray Krugman, they cultivate a dark esthetics, and a certain hermetic esotericism with their logo (the Chronos inspired of the astrological symbol of Saturn. To note that the dieresis added on “O” was at the origin of a fashion in the names of groups of heavy metal (for example Motörhead). The music of the group is very influenced by Black Sabbath, MC5, and Steppenwolf, according to clean the dires of the singer Eric Bloom and the guitarist Donald Roeser. The influence of Black Sabbath is perceptible in pieces like " Cities one flame with rock'n'roll " , or " Godzilla". That of the MC5 in " Hot rails to hell" , being reproduced on the album " Tyranny and mutation". And finally that of Steppenwolf in pieces like " The red and the black", " Career off evil" or " the subhuman". The group will play a resumption of " Born to Be wild" , the legendary song of the group Steppenwolf.

After their departure of Blue Öyster Cult, the Bouchard brothers will found each one a new group. Albert Bouchard will assemble The Brain Surgeons; Joe The Cult Brothers, who will become The X Brothers.
