The district of Blokovi is in the south-east of the urbanized part of the municipality of Novi Beograd. It is located on left bank of the Save, opposite the islands of Ada Međica and Ada Ciganlija. It is delimited by the districts of Bežanija and Bežanijska Kosa in north, by Block 58 in south-east (district of Savski Nasip) and by the district of the Dr. Ivan Ribar in the west.

When the construction of Novi Beograd started in 1948, the sector, designed for future extensions, was divided into 72 blocks, with several under-blocks (like 8-a, 9-a, 9-b, 70-a etc). Not having a name, the district took with time the name of Blokovi, word which, in Serbe, means the " blocs". The buildings of this district concern as a whole what one calls the architecture brutalist.

Blokovi is divided into two under-districts separated by the street Youri Gagarine : Savski Blokovi and Bežanijski Blokovi.

Savski Blokovi

Characteristics

The district of Savski Blokovi, in Serb Cyrillic СавскиБлокови, counted: 45056 inhabitants in 2002.

It is famous for its lines of residential gray concrete buildings. One finds there in particular the blocks 45 and 70 which gather 45 scrapes-ciels identical along Save. and 80 identical buildings close to the street Jurija Gagarina .

The buildings with two or four stages of blocks 70 and 45 are also known under the name of Naselje Sunca , the " city of the soleil". It was the name selected to attract the inhabitants when the construction of the block started in 1974. This district then counted a great number of intellectuals and artists.

The street Omladinskih brigada separates Blok 70-a from Blok 70, the street Gandijeva separates Blok 70 from Blok 44 and the street Nehruova Blok 44 of Blok 45.

Economy and transport

The district is entirely residential. On the other hand, as from the years 1990, a sector trading started to develop around the street Jurija Gagarina (Youri Gagarine).

Blok 70 is known like the Chinese Quartier of Belgrade; one finds many stores and Eastern restaurants there, as well as a famous Chinese market.

The lines of bus 45,68,73,76,82,89,94,95,601 and 610 serve the district, as well as the lines of Tramway 7,9 and 11.

However the player of basketball Žarko Paspalj, one of the investors of the project, announced that the opening of the park was deferred to 2008.

Bežanijski Blokovi (Oficirski Blokovi)

Characteristics

The district of Bežanijski Blokovi, in Serb Cyrillic БежанијскиБлокови, counted: 44505 inhabitants in 2002. It was built on the formerly uninhabited part of the old village of Bežanija which gave him its name. However the district is not completely urbanized. Like Savski Blokovi, it presents about fifty residential skyscrapers arranged in two parallel lines which cross Bloks 61,62,63 and the Western part of Blok 64.

Bežanijski Blokovi is also known under the name of " Oficirski Blokovi" (ОфицирскиБлокови), " blocks of the officiers" ; this name comes from the soldiers of the old Yugoslav army who came to settle there in great number.

The district is delimited in the south by the street Jurija Gagarina and in north by the street Vojvodanska (street of Voïvodine) which separates it from Bežanija. Inside the district, the street Dušana Vukasovića separates Bloks 61 and 62, the street Nehruova Bloks 62 and 63 and the street Gandijeva Bloks 63 and 64.

Economy and transport

Although located in the prolongation of the most industrialized zones of Novi Beograd (heavy industries like IMT , Minel , FOB-FOM , etc), the district is primarily residential.

In addition to the other lines of buses which serve Savski Blokovi, lines 71 and 72 cross Bežanijski Blokovi.

Culture of the district and public image

The district of Blokovi is socially mixed: it is not rare that a driver of bus has like neighbor of apartment a neurosurgeon.

Bloks located near Save are known for their peace. On the other hand, Bloks over-populated of the center of the district and, in particular, those of Blok of the officers have the reputation to form a true urban ghetto. This image is conveyed by recent Serb films, like Rane (Wounds), Apsolutnih sto , Jedan Na Jedan , Sutra ujutro and Sedam I Po .

A Graffiti of Blok 70 thus parodies a famous Serb song for the children: Cveće I will ukras bašte, Leptir I will ukras cveta, With decaf puna gandže , Known decaf will ukras geta .

Translation:

The flower is the ornament of the garden, The butterfly is the ornament of the flower, But children full with grass , The children are the ornament of the ghetto .

A famous group of Grunge resulting from Blok 19a, called Euforia, has with its repertory a named song " Blokovi".
