Block Nacionalista Galego

The BNG, or Bloque Nacionalista Galego (BNG - Galician Nationalist Block) defends autonomy and, in the long term, the Autodétermination of Galicia and the language Galician.

The BNG is the current expression of an active nationalist political current in Galicia since the medium of the Années 1960.

It is indeed during this decade, under the Franquisme thus, that it is created the UPG (Union of the Galician People) and the PSG (the Galician Socialist party).

These two parties of left, beyond their respective political positions, clearly initiate a process of reorganization political of Galician nationalism by equipping it with an orientation progressist.

In 1975, is created an-PG (the Galician Main road-Popular Parliament), the first experiment of articulation of face of the Galician nationalism which will find in the BNG its final expression.

In 1982, meets in Corogne, the congress founder of the BNG which absorbs an-PG, the UPG and the PSG.

In 1996, the BNG sends its first two elected officials to the the Spanish Cortes.

In 1999, a first European Député represents the BNG with the the European Parliament, but loses its seat in 2004 in spite of an alliance with the nationalists Basques (Parti nationalist Basque) and Catalans (Convergence and Union).

In 2000, three deputies are elected in Madrid, which represents the best score of its history to the legislative elections.

In 2004, two new Député S is elected with Madrid but the BNG loses its single Senator.

The regional elections of 2005, the BNG reaches for the first time the regional capacity (13 deputies out of 75, against 17 in 2001), in alliance with PSOE. The first vice-president of the Parliament of Galicia, María Tereixa Paz Free, is BNG, and the new government (the Xunta de Galicia ) will be formed by an alliance Socialist-nationalists putting an end to the long presidency of Manuel Fraga Iribarne, of the Popular party.

The president of the national council is as from 2005 Xosé Manuel Beiras Torrado is his national spokesperson is Anxo Quintana González.

The BNG is a party member of the European free Alliance.
