Blitzkrieg is a tactical Video game in real-time based on the events of the second world war. The play makes it possible to the players to assume the role of officers commendant during the battles of the second world war in Europe and North Africa. Each country has its respective military units historically correct. Similar to the plays Sudden Strike , Blitzkrieg concentrates more on the battles that the aspect of strategy in real-time with the construction of bases.
Blitzkrieg use the protective system against the copy StarForce. Blitzkrieg Anthology does not seem however to use it.
Graphics make a 3D realistic and the details include the climatic seasons, zones and the conditions of times which can affect the way of playing. Blood is present although it can be decontaminated. The play covers nearly 350 different units and objects. The player can build bridges, trench, pose mines, replace or repair units or call an air support, but there is no management system of resource, with share the warehouses which can be captured when they are present in the part. Virtually, all can be destroyed, even the buildings and the bridges. The forests can be shaven by the tanks and artillery. Each unit of a nation speaks their own language, thus adding to the immersion with the play.
The play is delivered with an editor who allows the user to create their own units and charts.

Three official extensions left, all three developed by the German company Plata Studios in Interactive collaboration with Nival, the developer of the original play. They were published by CDV Interactive:- Blitzkrieg: Burning Horizon follows the steps of the General Erwin Rommel at the beginning of the Ardennes until the battle against the Deutsches Afrika Korps while passing by the last acts of German resistance in occupied France.
- Blitzkrieg: Rolling Thunder recalls the career of the General George Patton during the second world war since the deserts of North Africa to the snow-covered forests of the Ardennes.
- Blitzkrieg: Green Devils , an extension which requires Rolling Thunder to play there.
Several let us add-ons nonofficial also left for the play:
- Mission Barbarossa and Kursk , developed by Active Gaming, respectively recalls the invasion of the Soviet Union called Opération Barbarossa in 1941 and the Bataille of Koursk in 1943.
- Stalingrad , developed by DTF Games, is a Stand-alone on the Bataille of Stalingrad as well on the side of German as of Soviet.
- Talvisota: Icy Hell , developed by Blitzfront, is a stand-alone based on the Guerre of Winter opponent Russian and Finnish between 1939 and 1940.
