The grass in botany

Bleaches on grass is opposed easily to tree, according to two criteria:

  • a criterion of consistency and biology, it is a not lignified soft plant. For this reason the Banana , although it reaches a height of several meters is a giant “grass” which pushes back each year starting from rejections; one cuts the pseudo-trunk, formed by the fitment of the sheets, to carry out the harvest of the Banane S;
  • a criterion of size: one tends to associate with grasses the woody plants of small size, the sub-shrubs, like the Thym, arranged in the “sweet herbs”, or the Bruyère, which compose the Lande S with the graminaceous ones and other grasses,

In the Classification of Raunkier (classification of the biological types), the grasses correspond primarily to:

  • Thérophyte S, plants which disappear during the bad season and survive in the form of Graine S; they are the annual plants;
  • Cryptophyte S, plants of which the air part dies in the bad season and who survive thanks to their underground part, Bulbe, rhizome or Tubercule.
