Blade Runner is a video game of ventures Westwood Studios published by Virgin Interactive in 1997.

It is drawn partly from the film Blade Runner (1982) but especially from the novel of Philip K. Dick: do Androïdes dream of electric sheep? . There are some characters of the film, whose Tyrell, Rachel Stevens, Hassan and Sebastian but they have only roles of second plan.

It is the second videoludic adaptation of this universe of Dick, the first, Blade Runner left in 1985 for the platforms Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum and Amstrad CPC. Developed by CRL Group PLC with a music of Vangelis it is a Shoot them up and not a play of adventure. This first play with Back to the Future and Rambo - all left in 1985 - are the first film adaptations concerned video.

Context

The history occurs in 2019 in a Los Angeles devastated by a recent war which removed the near total of the animals. The human ones have since a feeling of despair if they do not have a true animal because then they feel dishonoured. The retorting do not test any feeling for the animals and it is generally what makes it possible to trap them.

The player incarnates McCoy, “Blade Runner” which, as its trade orders to him, tracking and “reform” all the retorting (Androïde S humanoïdes) which are encrusted on Earth.

Initially, retorting them were created to help with the colonization of the hostile territories of Mars. They was modern slaves who did not have any right and were to serve their owners pioneers. But their increasing complexity their made it possible to become aware of their own existence.

With some bloody revolts of retorting over Mars, the latter were prohibited of stay on the Earth, and a special crack corps intended for their tracking and their “withdrawal” (elimination) was formed: they are “Blade Runners”.

Course of the play

“Blade Runners” have a certain material intended to help them in their investigation and which is available in the play:

  • the system ESPER : a powerful software able to enlarge in an extremely faithful way the least details of an image (photo, video image,…). System ESPER also makes it possible to have a direct analysis of the object and to take a photograph of it. It is also very sympathetic nerve to be used because it has an exclusive system of returned images.

  • the system KIA (Assisting Knowledge Integration: Assistant of Integration of Knowledge): laptop which makes it possible to have an eye on all the indices found in the play (objects, dialogs, images,…) but also, in the play, allows to have access to the menu, the safeguards and other interfaces traditional.

  • the Test of empathy Voight-Kampff : the retorting being machines - certainly very advanced - they are not prone to the Empathie like the human ones. The Test of empathy Voight-Kampff is intended for discovered retorting . The player makes “really” pass from the tests to the suspect individuals and must choose between the various intensities of question in order to succeed in determining if the person is - or not - a androïde. In general, a androïde which has just failed this test “is withdrawn” by “Blade Runner” which gains a substantial premium to have made a success of its withdrawal.

The history requires of the player to inquire into a massacre in a animalery which is charged to the retorting . This first investigation will bring it to others, to make its own choices and to forge its own destiny.

The play can be judged as innovator in the sense that it is not linear and that the made actions will influence the end of the play. Thus, if it is possible to remove all the réplicants, it is also possible not to kill them and sympathize with them. The choices carried out will make it possible to see one of the many ends which this play has: 7 possible different scenarios enclose the investigation with the revelation, according to the actions of the player, owing to the fact that the hero is him even a Réplicant or on the contrary a human being.
