Blackbird leucomèle

The Merle leucomèle ( Turdus leucomelas ) is a sparrow néotropical of the family of the Muscicapidae.

Description

The Blackbird leucomèle measurement approximately 23 cm.

Its wings and its back are maroon, its beige belly, its gray nape of the neck and its cap. Its white throat is finely striped of black.

Voice

Like many species belonging to the kind Turdus , the Blackbird leucomèle emits a clear and very mélodieux song. He generally sings with low height hidden in the vegetation.

Habitat

The Blackbird leucomèle lives in the thickets strewing savannas. It also populates the cities and the villages where it attends the lawns, the hedges and the gardens.

Distribution

The Blackbird leucomèle is very common on the Guianese littoral but is absent from interior of the grounds.

Food

This species seeks its food as well on the ground as at the top of the trees. It has a varied food mode made up of bays and various fruits (bananas, papaws). It also captures small lizards, worms and insects.

Reproduction

It is spread out over almost all the year in Suriname, where several broods can be successively high, while it seems to be held only at the time of the dry season in Guyana.

The female builds only a nest which it uses possibly several times of continuation (made rather rare in the sparrows), repairing it and increasing it before each re-use. The cut, made up of grass, foams and of mud and papered roots, can thus reach large-sized.

This bird installs its nest in the low branches of the trees and the bushes. Very anthropohile, it can also build it in buildings on a cross-piece, an edge of window or an air-conditioner.

The female lays two or three eggs which it broods during 12 or 13 days. The young people fly away at the age of 16 or 17 days.
