Black candles

black Candles (in English: has off Murder Quality , “a murder of high-line”) is the Romance second of the British writer John the Square, published in 1962. The history follows the investigation of George Smiley, character recurring of the novels of the author.

Summary

George Smiley, skilful agent of the British secret services is called by her former colleague Miss Brimley, writer of a newspaper, to inquire in connection with a letter of death threat. In this letter, a reader of the newspaper, Stella Rode, entrusts that her husband would prepare to assassinate it. Unfortunately, the reader is quickly assassinated and Smiley decides to find the assassin. Going on the place of the crime, in the famous school Edge (traditionalist private establishment for the children of the aristocracy), Smiley makes the meeting of various people living in the high-company.

John the Square denied that Carne is inspired by a particular school: “There is probably a dozen famous schools, for which it will be confidentially assured for you that Carne is their worked over again image. But that which will carry the eyes in their common rooms in search of Arcys, Fieldings and Hechts will seek in vain. ”

Adaptation

The novel was adapted for television by Thames Television in 1991. With Denholm Elliot, Joss Ackland, Glenda Jackson, Billie Whitelaw, David Threlfall, Ronald Pickup, Matthew Scurfield…
