Black Morelle

The black morelle ( Solanum nigrum ) is a herbaceous Plante of the family of the Solanacées, pertaining to the important kind Solanum , which contains in particular the Potato, the Eggplant and the Soft-bitter .

Names of the plant

Latin Solanum is a derivative of ground, solis (sun), commune, meadow saffron, grape of wolf .

German: Schwarzer Nachtschatten . English: black nightshade . Castilian: tomatitos . Italian: morella common .

Description

Annual plant with the very variable forms, but generally rather low (less than 60 cm). Generally glabrous, green stems with noirâtres, drawn up or spread out branches. Sheet S ovals with lancéolées, whole or slightly lobed. Inflorescence in Cyme from five to ten Fleur S. white Corolle (approximately 1 cm), with often considered petals, cheesecloth S yellows projecting. The Fruit is a bay globulous, black with maturity, container of many seeds.

Properties

As much the Solanaceous ones, the morelle black one is a plant with the toxic fruits, containing Solanine. It is however much less toxic than other plants of the same family, like the Belladone, and in certain crystallized countries one his fruits in the vinegar to make use of it like condiment the made-to-order of the Câpre S.

The morelle black one is a Adventice with spring germination which can become very awkward, mainly in estival cultures like that of the Maïs.

All the plant (except the quite ripe fruits which is edible) contains a toxic product which is the solanine, not destroyed by cooking, its ingestion can cause serious intoxications. This property is used in trade-guild to eliminate the Doryphore S.

The morelle one is in addition a medicinal plant with the virtues antispasmodic, analgesic and sedative.
