Black Lake

Black Lake is a district of the candienne city of Thetford Mines, in the south of the province of Quebec. Until October 17th, 2001, Black Lake was a small town populated of approximately: 5000 inhabitants. On this date, the towns of Black Lake and Thetford Mines, the municipality of Pontbriand, the municipality of the village of Robertsonville as well as the municipality of the canton of Thetford-Part-South gathered to constitute the new town of Thetford Mines. The name Black Lake however was preserved and it identifies the sector now corresponding to the territory of this old city.

Of an original surface of 5,5 km ², the municipal territory increased by the means of four annexations to extend now to 41,36 km ². The collective currency, “Foris super omnes”, can result in “Courageous between all” or “Tough into all”. This currency refers to tough courage pioneers. (see: )

Blake Lake has one of the largest mines for the exploitation of the Amiante and its fiber Chrysotile in the area of the Boiler-Appalachian Mountains. It is this mining which gave rise to the municipality: indeed, as of 1890, the extraction of the Amiante beat full sound with Black Lake, officially set up in 1906 in municipality of village, amended in that of city two years later, which, in addition, involved the displacement of the colony towards the south, whereas in the beginning, it was bordering lake Noir.

The Black lake, now drained artificially, gave its name to the city and remains omnipresent in the municipal history. Length 3 km and broad of 1,5 km, the lake was surrounded by mountains where wood pushed thickly: the trees, projecting their shade on water of the relatively deep lake, made them appear almost black. The English translated the French name into Black Lake , which was preserved for the municipality, although the majority of the population is French-speaking there and that gentilé Black-Lakien does not have any known English equivalent. Let us note that in 1884, existed a mission, become parish in 1924, answering in the name of Saint-Desired-of-Lake-Black : the everyday usage, for Black Lake, was Black Lac in the Années 1930 and 1940.

This sector of the new city has known for a few years a considerable growth as well on the industrial sphere, commercial as domiciliary.
