History

Bizeneuille

Population: 294 inhabitants in 2000. Surface: 2975 hectares. Origin of the name: Buginolio (1097), Bugenolio (12th century), Bigenolhe (13th century). Name of the inhabitants: unknown.

Several prehistoric objects were found, in particular a fair flint dagger 15 cm length in the Saint-Georges, as well as a striker and a fragment of axe in Pérelle. Pérot announces, in 1905, a menhir with the locality Pierre-Bore-hole, but this monument seems to have disappeared. On the other hand, close to Water, among rock accumulations which extend to length from the brook, one can recognize an artificial cluster of enormous blocks, called the Table of the Wolf, and which could be one of these installations organized by the prehistoric man to shelter burials. The ancient way from Limoges to Autun passed by Bizeneuille and the Cross of Fragne, being used as limit on one mile Gallic with the parishes of Saint-Angel and Verneix. The church of Bizeneuille, of the 12th century, under the patronage of Saint Martin's day, is remarkable by its multifoil gate; several Martin localities with the length of the way, as well as pieces of Main road, confirm the layout of the old road of the Pilgrims. The ancient establishment was very important on this soil. We detected many habitats, in particular in Mazerolles, close to an other old way, in the pieces of the Roadway, of Mazières, in Villatte, Rossinets, the Mallet Field, the Fields of the Bee, Amarons, at the Small Edge, towards the Unpleasant one… The remains abound in the grounds, and with Unpleasant for example, were found several grinding stones, a trunk cinéraire, white limestone flagstones of Berry, remainders of sarcophagi… The whole of these vestiges makes it possible to think that all the plate, around Bizeneuille, was intensely occupied at the time antique. A survey carried out, in 1970, by Mr. Desnoyers, close to the church, updated several sarcophagi of time mérovingienne; frequently, around the cemetery, of the later burials, accompanied " bowls of the morts" , are released during work, as well as formwork in the shape of trapezoid cut in the tuff. At the culminating point, in the east of the church, drew up a castle on mound: " … And also, its rights on a certain hovel called Touratte, in the middle of a mound surrounded by ditches, a garden, two ouches… " This castle on mound, known as also Castle-Strapping man, was sold like national good. Bizeneuille is attested by the forms Buginolio (1097), Bugenolio (12th century), Bigenolhe " (13th century). The suffix euille is of Gallic origin and indicates the clearing; the first part of the word appears to have in Bourbonnais a hydronomic value. And the tradition wants, without archaeological evidence, that an old establishment of baths existed there… It can be founded on the Bignalolia form, and after all, wouldn't be allowed to think that on this great way of pilgrimage, did not exist such an establishment? The close toponym Bagnard - place where one bathes, men or animals - could also confirm it. The brook of Bizeneuille, today brook of Mauvaisinière, often changed name. For Nicolay, it was Marmusse-on-Borders; for Cassini, brook of Fragne; it was also Laugh it at the Lady… It dug a deep rock ravine, at the bottom of which tapit the castle of Mauvaisinière… The territory of Bizeneuille is rich in medieval habitats. The mound of Richemont, perfectly preserved, measurement about fifty meters in diameter and 4 to 5 meters height; it is surrounded by a broad edge and partly filled ditches. One can recognize with the differences of vegetation the site of his old castle, where lived Templiers, then hospital and monk about Malta, owners of this establishment and fields around… toponymy preserved the names of the fields of the Bee (abbey) and large and small Vaults. Nicolay quotes the " sieurs of Touratte, Mauvaisinière and Richemont" who depended on the châtellenie of Hedgehog, while the noble house of Granchamp depended on Murat. The chart of Cassini shows in more the strongholds of Convict and Mollais. Convict and Grandchamp, two close castles, were surrounded by ditches. In Mollais, in the past Mottet, a field of the Tower is the code of an old strengthened place. Arginy also had its castle of which there remains the channel and of the fields of the Mound. Air photography enabled us to find the mound of Limited, close to the field of Châtelet. It is necessary to identify Bornais with this manor of Bournat, of the châtellenie of Hedgehog, of which " the duke Louis III, on February 6th, 1359, authorizes the sale made by Jean, lord de Repenti, in Goussaut de Thierry" (quoted by A. Leguai). Ancient and medieval habitats are thus abundant on the territory of Bizeneuille, territory on which were also located several disappeared villages or mills.
