Bizen-den

The Bizen-den (備前伝) indicates one of the five traditions of Japanese forging mill for the Koto period (fine of the era Heian at beginning Momoyama). This tradition gathers various considered schools, to which the styles and techniques are often close.

School Chogi (長義)

  • Characteristic general: show the characteristics of the Sôshu tradition, especially for the hamon and the jihada .
Founders: Nagashige (長重) and Kanenaga (兼重)
- Sugata : broad kissaki , fine kasane and light curve.
- Jihada : the jigane is soft, the jihada is itame-hada mixed with mokume-hada , denies and chikei .
- Hamon : based on nioi-deki . One finds gunomist midare with mimigata midare . The activity in denies is based on the tradition of Sôshu.
- Bôshi : midare komi and long kaeri with activity.
  • Blacksmiths: Nagashige (長重), Kanenaga (兼重), Nagamori (長守)

School Fukuoka Ichimonji (福岡一文字)

  • Characteristic general:
- Sugata : the tantô are often larger than the average but remain elegant.
- Jihada : mokume-hada combined with o-hada with chikei .
- Hamon : often in the style " " choji-midare combined with kawazuko-choji with superb hataraki , flambloyant
- Bôshi : midare-komi .
- Horimono : the horimono are rarres, but one sees sometimes throats bo-Bi and futasuji-Bi .

School Hatakeda (畠田)

The blades of the founder of this school remain rare contrary to those of Moriie.
Founder: Morichika (守近)
  • Characteristic general:
- Sugata : the blades are particularly imposing. Some tachi measure more 1m and are called nodachi or seoidachi . The tantô are long the same, they exceed 30cm indeed. These tantô in general has a marked sori .
- Hamon : near to the style Ichimonji which in o-choji-midare is combined with juka-choji in nioi-deki .
- Bôshi : midare-komi with a court kaeri .
  • Blacksmiths: Morichika (守近), Moriie (守家)

School Iwato Ichimonji (岩戸一文字)

  • Characteristic general: the blades of this school point out sometimes the style of Yamashiro.
- Sugata : sori not very marked, broad kissaki .
- Jihada : o-hada .
- Hamon : KB-choji-midare or suguha combined with KB-choji-midare in nioi-deki'. '
  • Blacksmiths: Yoshitake (吉武), Shigeyosi (重吉), Yoshiuji (吉氏), Yoshimori (吉守), Yoshitoshi (吉利), Yoshisada (吉定), Yoshihisa (吉久)

School Kanemitsu (兼光)

  • Characteristic general: this school is known to have to be divided into two periods of styles distints. The first period is characterized not a style close to Kagemitsu (of the Osafune school), with forms and steel typical of the time Kamakura ( nioi-deki ) “This tendency continues thus until for the Nambokuchô period. The second period, which starts with the era Bunna (1352-1356) results in broad a kissaki and a mihaba little curve:
- Sugata : broad kissaki , mihaba tightened and high shinogi . The tantô become more elegant about the Muromachi period.
- Jihada : beautiful jigane with utsuri and chikei .
- Hamon : o-midare in denies combined with kataochi gunomist and notare midare . One notes sometimes the presence of hataraki .
- Bôshi : very particular, called Kanemitsu bôshi : midare komi with nioi on the point.
- Horimono : one often finds horimono simple ( hi ), but also of the more particular horimono such as ken-maki ryu (dragon rolled up around a sword), tsume-tsuki-ken (surmounted sword of claws) and names of calligraphiées divinities.

School Katayama Ichimonji (片山一文字)

Founder: Norifusa (則房)
  • Characteristic general:

School KB-ichimonji (古一文字)

Founder: Sadanori (定則). School activates Kamakura period at the Nambokuchô period. This school being near geographically to the provinces to Bitcû and Bizen, one feels the influence of the general Characteristic schools of these régions.

- Sugata : the tachi are large and gracious with ikubi kissaki .
- Jihada : mokume-hada combined with o-hada . Presence of utsuri .
- Hamon : yakihaba irregular. Saka-chôji in nioi .
- Bôshi : KB-midare .
- Horimono : bôbi .
