Bixaceae

The family of the Bixacées is an small family of plants Dicotylédone S. In traditional classification (1981) it includes/understands 16 species divided into 3 kinds: Amoreuxia , Bixa and Cochlospermum.

They are small trees, shrubs or herbaceous plants, with coloured sap, some adapted to the arid regions, largely widespread in the tropical areas.

The kind Bixa includes 4 species of small trees or shrubs originating in Central America and the the Caribbean. One extracts an orange food dye from it: yellow of roucou. Most known is the Roucou ( Bixa orellana ).

The species Diegodendron humbertii , which only trains the family of Diegodendracées to it, is a small endemic tree of Madagascar. It seems to be very close about it.

The phylogenetic classification APG (1998) locates this family in the order of the Malvales and places the kinds Amoreuxia and Cochlospermum in a separated family, the Cochlospermacées.

The Classification APG II (2003) offers the option

  • of a family lato sensu including Amoreuxia , Bixa , Cochlospermum and Diegodendron or
  • a family strictly speaking of Bixa only.
