Bituminous

Flénu is a section of the Belgian city of Mons, located in Walloon region in the Province of Hainaut.

It was a common to whole share before the fusion of the communes of 1977.

Although there not being spoken, Flénu is said in Wallon Flinnu . For once, the pronunciation in local patois does not differ (flin-naked).

The flag is identical to that of Jemappes: blue and white. The streets of Bituminous were full with flags formerly, at the time of, for example, day the Mother's Day of the village fair of Bituminous. The only vestige is the flag raised at the time of the victories of the BC the 9, over the frontage of the room.

Etymology

The word Flénu comes from the Romance term flenne (weasel) and from the ending C , U ( utum ) which marks the great number. The place would have been abundant in weasels.

The districts of Bituminous are the following: the Battle field, Genestrois, the Sergeant (the “gagane”, of the street name of the Sergeant), Campiau, Products…

History

Young village, it was set up in commune in 1870, using two parts of the strongholds of Jemappes and Quaregnon. On the territory which it occupies today, one discovered of the vestiges of the remote times, even of the age of the stone. There was formerly in Flénu an important seigniory belonging to the chapter of Holy-Waudru.

August 23rd, 1914, the German army shot twelve civilians and destroyed there twelve houses at the time of the German Atrocités made at the beginning of the First World War.

The mining past of the village modified forever its relief and its landscape. It is there that the majority of the coal intended for the area was extracted. The village was the film framework on Coal-mining, in particular those of Henri Storck.

Bituminous of these villages all in length was one where the coffees abounded. There remain nothing any more but three or four about it now. The center of the economy of the time was the extraction of coal and the passage of the workmen to the coffee after their work.

Culture

The center of young people " Flenne" occupy the buildings of the old communal house/school to form youth and to organize conferences. Association is called thus because of the etymology of Bituminous. The CCJ, arts center of the young people, then, arts center of Jemappes, adopted a new formulation: CCJemappes-bituminous.

Sports

In sports, the Tennis shoe is a gold mine. The B.C. Bituminous is assembled until in national divisions what obliged it to emigrate of room. The General sports Hall of the swimming pool being too small, it is towards Quaregnon that the club was turned, from where its current denomination: B.C. Bituminous Quaregnon, called Pirates. It is the B.C. 9 Bituminous which took its place, 9 wanting to thus say the nine the new one (abbreviation word game slightly patoisante). To note: they play in red and white not to confuse them with Bituminous-Quaregnon which had the colors of Bituminous, blue and white. The swimming pool is very appraisal of the sportsmen, it remains one of only Large Mons. Football gave its feet to Flénu here some time with the re-creation of the F.C. Bituminous. For tennis, the club of Jemappes (R.T.C.J.) built a covered complex of two grounds where the associates can live their passion in winter and this, since the winter 1993. All these activities are on the same site, in the district of the " Produits".
