Bitter chocolate

bitter Chocolate (original title: Como agua chocolate para ) is published in 1989. It is about a novel written by Laura Esquivel (1950-), Mexican auteure.

Summary

The history occurs to the Mexico, at the beginning of the twentieth century, during the revolution. Mamá Elena is widowed. It raises her three daughters Rosaura, seventeen years, Gertrudis and Tita, fifteen years, of an iron hand. At it, one obeys and one does not stumble.

The junior, Tita, saw a history of love with Pedro Muzquiz. Only, the family tradition wants that the last one remains near the mother in order to deal with this one until its death. It occurs that which is occupied is well too old to find a husband. The mother of Tita, does not derogate from the tradition and moreover, she proposes in Pedro to marry Rosaura, its aïnée. This one accepts because he sees the only means of remaining close to Tita.

Unfortunately, the mother of Tita supervises it closely. The only means for Tita of expressing its passion and its feelings will be food. She will cook divinement well.

The book

The author built his book in the following way: each of the twelve chapters starts with a receipt of kitchen, for each month of the year. It is the narrator, the small niece of Tita which explains the receipts even time that she tells the history of her large aunt.

The author wanted to present a little the Mexican Révolution but especially the condition of the woman, the machism and the love in his country.

A film

bitter Chocolat was taken again out of film by Alfonso Arau, the husband of the writer in 1992, it is entitled the spices of passion .
