Jehan Titelouze (or Jean Titelouze) is undoubtedly a organist French born with Saint-Omer in 1563, died with Rouen the October 25th 1633. He is regarded as the founder of the French school of organ.
His/her father was ménétrier: itself arrived at Rouen towards the twenty years age and was to remain there during the remaining one of its life. He became organist of the church Saint Jean in 1585, then titular of the large-organ of the Notre-Dame cathedral in 1588. This one was at that time one of the most considerable instruments of the kingdom, which leaves think the talent of this 25 year old musician. He became canon of the cathedral in 1610, and acquired in this position the greatest fame like executant, type-setter, professor, expert in instrumental invoice, theorist of the music. It trained very many disciples and was friendly of Marin Mersenne with which it exchanged a followed correspondence and to which he provides invaluable councils in the drafting of his main work: the Universal Harmony published 1634 with 1637.
It publishes two collections of music of organ which inaugurate truly the literature of the instrument in France. The invention is forced much there than at its Italian contemporary Girolamo Frescobaldi whose it has neither impetuosity, neither rhythmic and harmonic audacity, nor odd character. Titelouze is not an innovator, but it carries at a point of still unknown perfection an erudite, monumental and rather severe polyphony.
