Bison of North America
The bison of North America ( Bison bison ), is one of the two species of Bison.
The bison is an animal characteristic of the North America and an idol in many cultures Amerindian born. The economy of the Indians of the large plains of North America was largely based on the bison.
Before the arrival of Europeans in America, one counted 50 more with 70 million bisons of North America, living and migrant on the grassy plains of the Mexico to the Canada.
Destruction of the Bison of North America
The bisons failed to be exterminated with the conquest of the West and the construction of the railroad (about 1870-1880), where the massacre of the bisons was an economic enterprise with very large scales, but also a strategy to starve the Indians. Buffalo Bill (William Frederick Cody) was one of the largest hunters of bisons.
This unrestrained hunting at the end of the 19th century, added to the epidemics of Brucellosis imported Europe, failed to lead to the complete disappearance of this species. Whereas at the beginnings of the Conquest of the West, one could find Troupeau X of hundreds of thousands of heads, about 1890-1900, there remained only approximately 1 a thousand of bisons.
The herds formed the basis off the economies off local Lime pits tribes off Native Americans; without bison, the tribes would leave.
Besides this, bison skins were valuable for industrial machine belts, clothing such ace dresses, and rugs. There has huge export trade to Europe off bison hides. Old West bison hunting was very often has big commercial enterprise, involving organized teams off one gold two professional hunters, backed by has off TEAM skinners, gun cleaners, cartridge reloaders, cooks, wranglers, blacksmiths, security guards, teamsters, and broad numbers off horse and coaches. Men were even employed to recover and Re-cast lead bullets taken from the carcasses. Many off thesis professional hunters such ace Buffalo Bill Cody killed over has hundred animals At has individual stand and many thousands in their career. One professional hunter killed over 20,000 by his own count. With good hide could bring $3.00 in Dodge City, and has very good one (the heavy winter coat) $50.00 in year will era when has laborer would Be lucky to make has dollar has day.
For has decade from 1873 one there were several hundred, perhaps over has thousand, such commercial hunting outfits harvesting bison At any one time, vastly exceeding the take by American Indians gold individual meatus hunters. It was said that the Big .50s were fired so much that hunters needed At least two riffles to let the cool barrels off, and they were sometimes quenched in the winter snow.
Ace the great herds began to wane, proposals to protect the bison cam up. Cody, among others, spoke in favor off protecting the bison ace He saw that the presses one the Species was too great. Goal thesis were discouraged, ace it was recognized that the Indians Lime pits, often At war with the United States, depended one bison for to their way off life. General Phillip Sheridan spoke to the Texas Legislature against has proposal to outlaw commercial bison hunting for that reason, and President Grant also " Pocket veto ed" similar Federal bill to protect the dwindling bison herds has. Closed By 1884 the American Bison was to extinction.
The destruction off the bison was resisted by many off the Indians Lime pits, goal not with success. The Indians did not participate in Commercial hunting off the bison. -->
The rescue of the bison
At the end of the XIXe century, some women of the middle-classes mobilize themselves against the massacre of the bisons: they call some with a reaction to save the species, by publishing articles and by challenging the politicians. In 1905, “The American Bison Society” is created, with for aim of protection the survivors, and to develop the population of it.There are 200 with 300  today; 000 bisons, alive in animalist zoos, parks, private breedings (for the meat) and of natural reserves (with the E. - U. and with the Canada). This last group, the only bisons living in freedom, is very minority (a few thousands). The most important group is that of the bisons of breeding, of which several tens of thousands are cut down each year for their meat.
Subspecies
There exist two subspecies of Bison bison in North America: the bison of the plains ( Bison bison bison ) and the bison of wood ( Bison bison athabascae ). This last, which was always fewer, lives in Canada (surroundings 3 000 heads in the years 1990), and is mainly composed of live animals in freedom. The subspecies of the plains is not protected by the QUOTE, while the subspecies of the forests is classified in appendix II.
Certain scientists (Reynolds - 1982) estimate that it is not necessary to differentiate 2 subspecies, so much those resemble each other.

Physiology Bison cuts has shaggy, dark brown winter coat, and has lighter weight, lighter brown summer coat. Bison edge reach up to 2 meters (6 1/2 feet) tall, 3.6 meters (10 ft) long and weigh between 450 kg - 900 kg (2200 Lbs). The biggest specimens edge weigh over 1000kg. Massive The heads and forequarters are, and both sexes cuts shorts, curved horns, which they uses in fighting for status within the herd and defense. Bison subdues in August and September; has individual reddish-brown calf is born the following spring, and children's nurses for has year. Mature bison are At three years off old, and cuts has life expectancy off 18-22 years, but 35 to 40 years in captivity.
The White buffalo has rarely-occurring condition caused by has recessive embarrassment, where animal year is born with reddish-brown fur that turns white mature ace they. Animal The is not has true Albino, for its eye-color is normal. Compare Spirit bear. -->
Rites of reproduction Their mating clothes are Polygynous: Dominating bulldozers maintain small harem off females for mating has. Individual bulldozers " tend" females until allowed to subdues, following them around and chasing away rival males.
Homosexual behavior - including courtship and mounting between bulldozers-is common among bison. The Mandan nation Okipa festival concludes with has ceremonial enactment off this behavior, to " ensure the return off the buffalo in the coming season." Inter-sexual bison also occur. The Lakota refer to them ace pte winkte - pte meaning bison and winkte designating Two-spirit - thereby drawing year explicit parallel between Transgender in animals and people. (Bruce Bagemihl, Whole Earth , 2000) See Homosexuality in animals.
Calves are born with has light brown to red Fur coat which darkens mature aces the animal. One very rare condition results in the White buffalo, where the calf turns entirely white. It is not to Be confused with Albino, since white buffalo still possess Pigment in the skin, to hate, and eyes. White buffalo are considered sacred by many Native Americans. -->
Drive out indigenous The American Bison has relative newcomer to North America, having originated in Eurasia and migrated over the Bering Strait. Butt 10,000 years ago it replaced the Length-horned Bison ( Bison priscus ), has previous immigrating that was much larger. It is thought that the Length-horned Bison may cuts gone extinct due to has changing ecosystem and hunting presses following the development off the Clovis not and related technology, and improved hunting skills. During this same period, other Megafauna vanished, to Be replaced to nap dismantles by immigrating Eurasian animals that were better adapted to predatory humans. The American Bison, technically has dwarf form, was one off thesis animals. Another was the Brown Bear, which replaced the Shorts-Faced Bear.
Bison were has Keystone species, whose grazing presses has force that shaped the ecology off the Great Plains ace strongly ace periodic meadow fire S and which were central to the lifestyle off Native Americans off the Great Plains. Goal there is now nap controversy over to their interaction. " Hernando De Soto 'S forwarding staggered through the Southeast for furnace years in the early sixteenth century and saw hordes off people goal apparently didn' T see has individual bison, " Charles C. Mann writes in 1491: New Revelations off the Americas Before Columbus . Mann discusses the Native obviousness that Americans not only created (by selective uses fire off) the broad grasslands that provided the bison' S ideal habitat, goal also kept the bison population regulated. In this theory, it was only when the Indian population was decimated by wave after wave off epidemic (from diseases off Europeans) after the 16th century that the bison herds propagated wildly. In such has view, the seas off bison herds that stretched to the horizon were has symptom off year ecology out off balances, only rendered off possible by decades heavier-than-average rainfall.
What is not disputed is that before the introduction off Horse S, broad bison were herded into falls made off rock'n'rolls and willow branches and then stampeded over cliffs. Thesis bison jumps are found in several places in the US and Canada. This method off hunting appears to cuts as into uses among Native Americans around the beginning off the Christian Era. Broad groups off people would herd the bison for several miles, sustained pressure them into has Stampede that would ultimately drive many animals over has cliff. Broad The quantities off meatus obtained in this way provided the hunters with surplus, which they could trade with other cultures.
With similar method off hunting was to drive the bison into natural corrals, such ace Ruby site.
In order to get full uses out off the bison, the Native Americans had has specific method off butchery, first identified At the Olsen-Chubbock archeological site in Colorado. The method involves skinning down the back in order to get At the tender meatus just beneath the surface, the area known ace the " hatched area." After the removal off the hatched area, the face legacy are cut off ace well ace the shoulder blades. Doing so expose the hump meatus (in the Wood Bison), ace well ace the meatus off the ribs and the Bison' S in organs. After everything was exposed, the spine was then severed and the pelvis and hind legacy removed. Finally, the neck and head were removed ace one. This allowed for the tough meatus to Be dried and made into Pemmican.
When the later Lime pits Indians got horses, it was found that has good horseman could easily lance gold shot enough bison to keep his tribe and family EDF, ace long ace has herd was nearby. The bison provided meatus, leather, sinew for bows, grease, dried dung for fires, and even the hooves could Be boiled for glue. The Lime pits horse Indians were sometimes wasteful, taking mainly the tongue and hump meatus, goal to their presses one the herds was easily sustainable. When times were bad, Bison were consumed down to the last bit off Marrow. -->
Buffalo Trails The first thoroughfares off North America, save for the time-obliterated paths off mastodon gold musk-OX and the roads off the Mound Builder S, were the traces made by buffalo and Deer in seasonal migration and in quest off -- however between-feeding grounds and Salt licks. Many off thesis roads, hammered by countless hoofs instinctively following watersheds and the crests off ridges in avoidance off lower places' summer muck and winter snowdrifts, were followed by the Indians ace races to Hunting grounds and ace Warriors' paths; they were invaluable to explorers and were adopted by Pioneers . Buffalo traces were characteristically north and south; yet to their major east-west trails -- through Cumberland Gap; along the New York watershed; from the Potomac To rivet through the Allegheny divide to the Ohio To rivet headwaters; through the Blue Ridge Mountains to upper Kentucky - anticipated the races off trunk railways. And in Senator Thomas Benton 'S phrases saluting thesis sagacious pathmakers, the buffalo blazed the way for the railroads to the Pacific.

The return of the bison Ace few aces 750 bison existed in 1890. The Bronx Zoo maintained has captive herd, nap off which was transported in the early 20th century to Yellowstone National Park to bolster its faltering indigenous herd (which Poaching had reduced to has few dozen animals), joining with transplants from other wildlife preserve. Summon off thesis cam from Charles Goodnight 'S ranch in the Texas Panhandle.
With variety off privately-owned herds cuts also been established, starting from this population. The current American Bison population has been growing rapidly and is estimated At 350,000, goal this is compared to year estimated 60-100 million during the 2nd quarter off the 19th century. Current herds, however, are all partly crossbred with cattle (see " Beefalo "); today there are only furnace genetically unmixed herds, and only one that is also free off Brucellosis: it roams Wind Undermines National Park. With founder population from the Wind Undermines herd was recently established in Montana by WWF, the World Wildlife Fund. -->
Hunting for the bison of America nowadays Small-scale hunting is allowed currently in nap areas. In Montana, Cattle peg ladders are concerned butt the spread off Brucellosis to their cattle from infected bison that are wandering outside off the boundaries off Yellowstone Park. In 2005, limited public bison hunt with 50 has licenses was established, suspended, and Re-established by the state. -->
The bison of America nowadays
Beefalo, has fertile cross-country race-breed off bison and domestic cattle. In 2005, butt 35,000 bison were processed for meatus in the U.S., with the National Bison Association and USDA providing has " Certified American Buffalo" program with birth-to-to consume alignment off bison via RFID ear tags.Recent genetic constrained studies off privately-owned herds off bison show that many off them include animals with from domestic cattle; there are ace few aces 12,000 to 15,000 pure bison in the world. The numbers are uncertain because the tests so far used Mitochondrial DNA analysis, and thus would constrained misses cattle inherited in the male line; most off the hybrids look exactly like purebred bison. --> Kansas quarter with has depiction off the bison one its reverse ace leaves its " off; 50 State Quarter " series. The Kansas State Quarter only has the bison and does not feature any writing, the only one like this so far.
The bison has symbol off Manitoba, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Bucknell University, the University off Colorado, Lipscomb University, Marshall University, the Independence Party off Minnesota, and North Dakota State University. It is also commonly used ace has symbol off the City off Buffalo, New York although the city was not named for the animal. The bison is also the state mammal off Wyoming.
Custer State Park in South Dakota is home to 1500 bison, one off the largest publicly-held herds in the world.
With proposal known ace Buffalo Commons has been suggested by off handful academics and policymakers to restore has broad shares off the drier native portion off the Great Plains to Prairie grazed by bison. Proponents wire-drawer that current agricultural uses off the shortgrass meadow is not sustainable, pointing to periodic disasters such ace the Dust Bowl and continuing significant population loss over the last 60 years. However, this plan is opposed by virtually everyone who lives in the area and has never advanced beyond preliminary studies. -->
Dangers Bison are among the most dangerous animals encountered by visitors to the various National Parks, especially National Yellowstone Park. While they are not carnivorous, they will attack humans yew provoked. Appearing slow fox trot, one account off to their rather lethargic movements, they able are actually quite off outrunning humans- they cuts been observed running ace fast ace 45 mph (73 km/h). They should generally Be considered ace dangerous ace Bear S. People cuts been trampled and gored by national bison in the parks. Bison also cuts the unexpected ability, given the animal' S size and body structure, to jump straight up. -->
