Bishōnen

The term bishōnen (美少年, of 美 Bi beauty and shōnen young man) is a Japanese Mot which means “pretty boy, almost androgyne”. It is a term running in the fields of the Manga S and of the Anime.

Details

It is a specifically Japanese concept of male beauty for an young man, since the prefix Bi (美) specifically gets busy for the female beauty . If one uses this prefix with the suffix jin () for “anybody”, thus forming the word bijin , i.e. “beautiful person”, this term is used exclusively to mean “beautiful woman”.

The typical bishōnen is generally thin and not very muscular. Its chin is not pronounced and its Cheveux has a worked style. Its general appearance is rather Androgyne. The esthetics of the bishōnen comes from the young homosexual lover ideal, an idea which is probably the heritage of the effiminés actors playing the feminine roles in the theater Kabuki. This style is perpetuated nowadays in the cultures of the mangas and of animate, in particular in the kinds shōjo, Shōnen-have and Yaoi. In animate, the majority of the homosexual characters are put in the category of the bishōnen.

The origin of this concept is the Known as one of Genji of Murasaki Shikibu.
