Birsig
The Birsig (also called Börsegraben in Alsace) is a Rivière free - Suisse.
Course
Birsig takes its source in the north of the hills of the Blauen close to the common Frenchwoman of Wolschwiller. From there, it runs out in direction of Switzerland, then mark the border between the two countries, cuts the enclave of Rodersdorf, then share in the canton of Basle-Countryside along the valley of the Leimental while crossing the communes of Biel-Benken, Therwil, Oberwil, Bottmingen und Binningen before being thrown in the the Rhine in the town of BasleIn the perimeter of the city, the river runs in its natural bed although its banks are reinforced so as to prevent that the risings do not cause a damage in the city. In certain districts, blocks of houses were built directly on its banks. Used during many years as natural sewer, it was known downtown under the name of the large cesspool (in German of die large Kloake ) and transported several diseases, such as the Choléra and the Typhus.
Nowadays, the near total of the course of Birsig on the territory of the Canton of Basle-City is underground. Only the part skirting the Zoo of Basle is visible on a few hundred meters.
