Birjand

Birjand بيرجند is the capital of the province of the Khorasan of the south located at the east of the Iran, known for its exports of saffron and carpets hand made.

It had a population estimated at 183.010 inhabitants in 2005.

Being close to the border with the Afghanistan, Birjand is located on the " Silk route " Opium which is introduced in Iran before carrying on its road towards the Europe. (the area is also called " crescent of the opium")

The first urban water distribution network in Iran was installed in Birjand.

The Shokatiyeh school in Birjand, with the school Dar-ol Fonoun with Teheran were the first public schools in Iran.
